Tuscarora Almanac for October 17 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Fri Oct 17 08:32:50 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for October 17 1922 – from The Book of First Runs The IRT Livonia Avenue Line is extended from Pennsylvania Avenue to New Lots Avenue. 1949 – from The Book of First Runs The first train of BMT Standards ran in test service on the Astoria Line to Ditmars Boulevard. The consist was (n) 2450-4025-2451 and 2536-2525-2534. 1957 – from The Book of Special Runs Three sets of “Q” Type elevated cars are tested in service on the Franklin Avenue Shuttle (BMT RT 7). They were withdrawn after one day. The motor cars still retained the trucks form the IRT Composite cars and they had a hard time climbing the grade north of Botanical Garden station. Platform sills were added to the doors as well. 1965 – from The Book of Services Changes Tuscarora Dispatch No 6 IRT Service Changes October 1965 Sunday, October 17, 1965 was the last day for the second season of the New York World’s Fair. It was also the last day of operation for the No. 7 World’s Fair Special. Accordingly a new IRT schedule was put into effect on this date. The most important change was the restoration of 24 hour express service on the Lexington Avenue Line for the first time since 1960. A new weekday midday Flushing Express service went into effect on Monday, October 18. These trains run between Main Street and Times Square. They operate express between Willets Point and Grand Central with one stop at Queensboro Plaza. Trains leave Main Street from 10 AM to 1 PM and leave Times Square from 1 PM to 3 PM. Unfortunately there were some cutbacks as well. Weekend operations of No.3 trains to Flatbush Avenue and No. 5 trains to South Ferry would end at 9 PM instead of midnight. Source: New York Division Bulletin / December 1965 New York City Subway Map and Guide / 1965 and 1967 editions 1981 – from The Book of First Runs The first SPV-2000 diesel railcars go into service on the Hudson Line of Conrail. 1982 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of operation for the “old cars” on the Media and Sharon Hill rail lines. Brilliner 7 carried a banner reading “Farewell, parting is such sweet sorrow”. 1983 – from The Book of Last Runs The Southeast Michigan Transportation Authority discontinues commuter rail service on the Detroit – Pontiac Line. Twenty two of the cars are acquired by the Metro-North Railroad. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

And on the last day of the Fair, a record 446,953 people attended. Expo 67 almost matched the two-year attendance total of the NY World's Fair, and had it not been for a transit strike in September, it could very well have exceeded it. |

Unlike the New York Fair it only lasted for six months. Montreal built a new rubber tired rapid transit system. The Expo had its own rapid transit line, the Expo Express. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

We were there twice: during Memorial Day and then in August after my cousin's wedding. Naturally, I was captivated by the Metro and Expo Express. My understanding is that the Exo Express was automated. There was an inbound stop at Habitat '67, but even by the end of May, trains didn't stop there. I vivdly rememberr the Minirail that went right through the US Pavilion. We rode on that portion as well as most of the other segmants that the blue and white trains ran on. One minirail line was moved to Palisades Amusement Park after Expo closed. |

I remember after the Worlds Fair they had post rush hr expresses from Main St to TS called "Shoppers Specials" to encourage the use of the expresses for shopping in Manhattan. Last express left round 12N IIRC. That didn't sit too well with the merchants along Main St and up Roosevelt Ave. They felt that the service would cut into their business. The TA caved (sort of) by dropping the name "Shoppers Special" but kept the service anyway, at least until the next budgetary service cutback. |

I wondered why the TA didn't salvage the Peckham motor trucks from the gate cars that were retired after the Q cars got sent back to the BMT and reinstall them on the Q cars. I guess the TA didn't want to spend the money to reverse the modifications that were made to accommodate the Composite motor trucks which provided poor performance which the Q cars were saddled with for the rest of their service lives. |

I also have a couple of related questions. Around that time with the turnover of the Fulton St el to the IND, the C types became available and since they had the original trucks and were already able to operate where 10 ft wide cars operate, why weren’t they assigned to the Fkln Shuttle? Also when Fulton closed there was talk of sending the C types to Myrtle, but with their “skirts” they were too wide so the idea was dropped. My question is why couldn’t the TA have simply removed those skirts from the cars so they would have been able to fit on Myrtle? |

The C types were downright ugly with their mismatched trailer car in the middle and their doors riding on outside tracks rather than the Q cars' much better solution having their doors retract into pockets in the car sides as on subway cars. However they could have donated their original motor trucks to the Q cars after the abandonment of the Fulton St. line in Brooklyn after April 1956. |

They solved that by adding steps that partially closed the gap but still cleared past Bway. The same thing could have been done on the Cs. |

They got away with that because the Qs rode higher on their trucks thus the extension plates were higher than the platform and would have no problem south of Broadway. We'll never know if that would have worked with the Cs |
