Tuscarora Almanac for April 22

Tuscarora Almanac for April 22

1964 – from The Book of first Runs

This is opening day for the 1964 Season of the New York World's Fair at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens.

The New York City Transit Authority begins operation of the No. 7 World's Fair Special running between Times Square and the World's Fair (Willets Point) Station. The specials carry regular signs but stop only at 5th Avenue and Grand Central.
The specials leave from Times Square from about 10 AM to 3 PM on weekdays and from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM on weekends. The special leave the fair from about 9 PM to 11 PM on weekdays and 8 PM to 11 PM on weekends.

The NYCTA also begins operation of a train on the IND Crosstown Line running non-stop from Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street to Roosevelt Avenue on a half hourly headway from about 9:30 AM to 3 PM. Due to low ridership this was cut to two morning trains on May 7 and discontinued about a week later.

The Long Island Railroad began operation of the World's Fair Special running non-stop between Pennsylvania Station and the World's Fair. The cost for this service was fifty cents and used a special token deposited in turnstiles at the World's Fair.

The LIRR also began running a second service from Jamaica Station to the World's Fair reversing east of Woodside. This service ran midday and evenings.

(N.B. If anyone has more detailed information on the LIRR fare collection procedures at Penn Station or the Jamaica - World's Fair train would you please let me know and I will include it in The Almanac.)

Sources: My own records and the NYD Bulletin for June 1964.

Additional Info provided by Mr. Andy Sparberg ; Jamaica - World's Fair shuttle did not use diesel engines but was a conventional MU electric train with two engineers, one at each end. The train reversed direction at the now-vanished WIN Interlocking (where the Port Wash and Main Line diverge east of Woodside, atop Queens Blvd.). The operation was a headache and was not replicated for the Fair's 1965 season. Passengers between branches east of Jamaica and World's Fair transferred to Port Washington Branch trains at Woodside, much like today's travelers to/from Citi Field and the Tennis Center. I believe that additional Penn-World's Fair shuttles were provided with a Woodside stop, to accommodate the Fair travelers.

The TA didn't seem to have luck with these super expresses. This and the NX in 1968 seemed to suffer the same fate.

I guess the Flushing Line super express was successful since it kept running.

I would presume that the super express GG caught up to its leader pretty quickly and caused the service to be slower than expected?

My take on this has been that Hoyt Schermerhorn is hardly the most convenient of stops to originate. You didn't have many people that lived near there, it is only convenient to Culver and Fulton riders, not to anyone else in Brooklyn. With the current exception of Jay St/Boro Hall, there are no transfers outside of the IND, and that transfer didn't exist then either. My understanding was that this was on purpose too, the IND wasn't going to be near any IRT or BMT line, crossing over/under them.

Didn't MaBSTOA have a special shuttle to the Fair that originated at Third Avenue and 59th Street? I saw a pic of one such bus (numbered in the 5200's) taking in passengers. (Yeah, I know, that's more for the BusChat side.)

Hi Mark: IIRC every token booth on the system had a large sign with detailed directions to the fair. None of these mentioned the crosstown service.

The crosstown line was not well known even to long time residents. Unless you lived in downtown Brooklyn you might not have known where Hoyt-Schmerhorn was. Whereas all the subway maps featured a bright blue line highlight the No. 7 train. Also the crosstown line did not go direct. You still had to transfer at Roosevelt Avenue to the 7 train.

Even though we lived on the GG line, we went to the Worlds Fair by the 7 Super Express. The entire family went, GG to Hoyt & Schemerhorn, A to Jay St Boro Hall, F to 42nd St., 7 Super Express (5th Ave) to Willets Point/Shea Stadium.

A good time was had by all.

Here's another entry for the Book of First Runs for this date.

Denver, Colorado
Regional Transportation District
April 22, 2016

Denver's first commuter rail line, the University of Colorado A Line, a 22-mile line from Union Station to Denver International Airport, opened today.

Schedules touted a 37-minute ride from end to end, and on one of the runs I was on, it lived up to that claim. Trains normally arrive on Track 1 at Union Station, and the platform is long enough to berth at least an eight-car train, although standard length is four cars. The airport station has an island platform and can also berth eight-car trains. All other stations have side platforms and can berth four-car trains. Most of the line is double-tracked; however, there are two stretches of single track. One of these is the long flyover over Airport Blvd. and I-70 and the other is from just north of the 61st Ave. station to just before the bridge over Peña Blvd. This latter stretch is graded for two tracks and all bridges have room for a second track.

If only they'd kept that World's Fair spur line from 25 years earlier...:)

We paid our sole visit to the Fair on July 20, 1965, while on vacation. We rode in from Linden into what was left of Penn Station and took the LIRR out to Flushing.

Shown here is An Astoria bound triplex most likely on one of its last runs at QBP. On the canopy is the blue arrow pointing to Flushing bound World's Fair trains. I don't know if the pic is from 64 or '65.
