Thornwood was too close to Pleasantville to make much sense and never had significant ridership.

The last train over the Brooklyn Bridge left at about 12 Noon, that Sunday. It was a 5 car gate train for the Lexington Ave Line. About 200 people rode over the bridge. Right after the train left Bridge St, at 12:08PM, railroad ties were bolted in place over the tracks at the west end of the platform, to embargo service. Demolition began on the following day, Monday, March 6th, 1944.

So they would have had to build a high platform in order to allow the new electric rolling stock to stop there.

Correct. But the ridership at that station didn't justify the expense, so we were told.

Great photos of a New York City subway car that I never rode at all. They were all gone one year before I was born.

However, looking at some research and documentation, the BMT Bluebird was supposed to have this fancy modern air cooling filtration system installed and used in the cars themselves.

Upon noticing this image from the collection of nycsubway.org, as well as a color snapshot in the latest New York City Subways Calendar, I spotted in each photo an interior view with R-10 style fans later placed inside there.

BMT Bluebird Interior, Photo by Frank Pfuhler, September 13, 1954.

OK, for those that are knowledgeable about this model of subway car, what necessitate them to have this additional feature (i.e. the fans) put there during their service life. By the way, thanks for posting and sharing these vintage images here.

Although Bluebird 8000 supposedly had no drawheads to enable it to MU with the rest of the Bluebirds, how come there is a photo of it in Jim Greller’s book clearly showing an H drawhead complete with electric portion?

Not likely! The only Sunday demolition that I am aware of was on the 5th Ave el. That was done because the road underneath had to be closed and traffic detoured. Back then, most businesses were closed on Sunday, so traffic was lighter. Besides, the first stage of el demolition was the removal of conduits and cables. You did not have to close the street beneath it for that!

That 5th Ave demolition over Atlantic Ave was on Sunday, Oct 26th, 1941. Due to its heavy traffic, Mon-Sat, Atlantic Ave was shut down on that Sunday.

If they did start preliminary demolition on Sunday, 03/05,1944, it was because of a shortage available manpower during WWII. Perhaps, they were available, so they got started a day early.

There are a couple of photos of the first unit 8000 in various locations on the Fulton St el but it was probably not in regular service but ran as a special the way the SOAC ran on the NYCTA in the 1970s.

I love those sections of the Fulton that got rebuilt during the Dual Contracts. It shows what could've been. I would have loved railfnning all over the City on the various Els..

But in the end, building the IND and having good access to Manhattan from Fulton was probably the best solution. Ashland place would've put yet more trains through De Kalb.

The newly formed (1923) BMT took a look at the Ashland Place project and decided not to participate in it. Besides having to rebuild older elevated sections, install tracks and equipment, it would have had to buy 200 steel subway cars for $40 million. This car order would have been in addition to the Triplexes and Standard trailers that they had ordered. The BMT quietly backed out of the project in 1926. Ironically, Mayor Hylan had left office on Dec 31st, 1925.

Wish I had know about SOAC, as I was in Brooklyn in July 1974 (recently returned from 3 years in Illinois). But no internet back then, and if it was in the newspaper, I didn't read it (albeit back then, I would read the Daily News only for the sports, and in the summer, the centerfold in case they posted a pic of babes in bikinis) 🙂

Possibly, the overhead support for the streetcar electric wires needed for operation to cross the bridge. Both elevated trains and them used it, and transit operation began on the bridge way back then with cable operated rail cars.

That makes sense. I didn't realize that streetcars also would have had to pass through Sands St but in retrospect it makes sense that it was the direct route to the bridge tracks.
