No. 4 Lexington Avenue Expresses now use only a single conductor for a ten car train.
Lo-V’s had been the mainstay of the No. 4 for many years. They required two conductors for a ten car trains. The R-Types need only one. During the transition period all trains ran with two conductors.

Speaking of conductors, did an 8-car train of BMT standards always require two conductors?

I don't now. Maybe some of the BMT fans can help us out.

As originally delivered, the BMT Standards did not have multiple unit door control (MUDC), and there was a conductor/guard in each car. At some point (1920s?) they were retrofitted with MUDC and only required one conductor per train. This was concurrent with reconfiguring many cars into 3-car B sets. A cars were singles. Only the middle car of the B sets had active door controls.

IIRN an eight-car train would have two B sets and two single A cars tacked on at one end. Someone said there was a separate conductor in the two-car A pair.

That was the case and I believe the additional C/R whom we on the BMT called a "second carman” was eliminated circa 1960. There is a bit of a side story about BMT second carmen. Many C/Rs who worked as second carmen never qualified as C/Rs 1st position or "C/R in Charge.” When the second car tricks were eliminated, C/Rs who as we used to say “never took the badge” had to work platform. The Plat C/Rs who were not qualified for any typeof train service complained and so a separate set of platform tricks were set up to be picked by the second carmen. The work programs were titled ”Conductors Secondary.” Over the years as the number of true second carmen was reduced by attrition, the separate roster of second car tricks remained pickable for any C/R who wanted to pick them. As a new C/R in 1966 I even picked one.

I’m not exactly sure if the Lo-0Vs actually “required” 2 C/Rs per train since the west side IRT trains that used Lo-Vs operated 9 car trains with 1 C/R. The reason for the practice remaining for so long was that the TA had to wait until all the platforms on the east side were lengthened to accommodate 10 full cars. With Hi-Vs and Lo-Vs the very end vestibule doors were usually past the platform end since they didn’t open up. I’m not sure of the exact year but originally 10 car trains on the IND also require 2 C/Rs but sometime in the mid 1950s that was changed to 1 C/R per 10 car train.

IIRC two conductors were used on 11-car Ethel and Fred trains in the 50s.

If you've ever seen The Wrong Man with Henry Fonda, you can see the conductor between the first two cars of the E train he gets off of at Roosevelt Ave.
