That was the case and I believe the additional C/R whom we on the BMT called a "second carman” was eliminated circa 1960. There is a bit of a side story about BMT second carmen. Many C/Rs who worked as second carmen never qualified as C/Rs 1st position or "C/R in Charge.” When the second car tricks were eliminated, C/Rs who as we used to say “never took the badge” had to work platform. The Plat C/Rs who were not qualified for any typeof train service complained and so a separate set of platform tricks were set up to be picked by the second carmen. The work programs were titled ”Conductors Secondary.” Over the years as the number of true second carmen was reduced by attrition, the separate roster of second car tricks remained pickable for any C/R who wanted to pick them. As a new C/R in 1966 I even picked one. |
