And trains that ended at Chambers Street didn’t run under Nassau Street at all. SMH.

It was just as well. I remember the family up the block let me tag along with them there a few times in ‘84 and ‘85 and it seemed shittier and shittier. They always blame the insurance as the reason for not reopening but it was a shabby dump in 1985.

Well The current Van Wyck Expwy pretty much follows the path of the original VanWyck Blvd. There are a few other avenues and boulevards that ended up as routes for highways. In the Bronx, Deegan Blvd became the route of the Major Deegan Expwy, and Horace Harding Blvd evolved into the Horace Harding Expwy which is now the LIE.

Intersting note about Playland is that a former TA M/M Peter Horowitz used to have a side business maintaining gaming machines in the Playland amusement park and when the original owner of the park wanted to close it down, Peter managed to scrape up enough money to purchase it. What the actual financial arrangements were I don’t know. A few years later, a developer came along and offered Peter more money than he could ever hope to make in a lifetime so Peter sold. Unfortunately not too long after the sale the developer went belly up and a bit later Peter passed away.

Interestingly, Sheepshead Bay on the Brighton Line is actually at Sheepshead bay Road and the Brighton Bch station is over Brighton Bch Avenue.

Also Bruckner Blvd shares its name with the Bruckner Expressway which runs down its center and above it through several Bronx neighborhoods on its way to the Triboro Bridge.

But that part of Sheepshead Bay Road was Shore Road when the station was established.

And Brighton Beach and the line well predate Brighton Beach Avenue, which was the location of the Race Track Grand Stands until the current structure was built.

I notice that when a station becomes a terminal they tend to add the name (e.g. When the N terminated at 86th Street it was called Gravesend-86th Street. When it was extended back to Coney Island they just called it 86th Street)

Isn't the immediately surrounding neighborhood also sometimes referred to as Broadway Junction, presumably derived from the station?

On a related note, the area around the intersection of Nostrand and Flatbush is locally referred to "The Junction". I've always wondered if there was a rail influence of some kind.

I never gave it too much though but it two major Brooklyn avenues intersecting with a train terminal and bus lines. As far as I’m concerned that’s The Junction.

AFAIK, E New York is the name of the neighborhood. Although the name of the station was “Broadway East NY” the destination signs read “Fulton- East NY” a reference to the station being on the IND Fulton St Line. The Euclid and Lefferts readings were also preceded by the name “Fulton” even though neither station is actually on Fulton St simply to indicate the name of the line that the trains travel on.

I doubt that the station name itself was changed, just the readings on the trains and that would be to distinguish it from 86 St/4 Av to avoid passenger confusion.

The former BMT - L-train station platform was called Broadway Junction, while the former BMT - now current J/Z platforms were called Eastern Parkway. I remember and have train maps that refer to those names.

I always wondered why The IND's Broadway-East New York station was not originally named Broadway Junction until recently. After all, the Board of Transportation had owned the BMT for over 6 years.

Changing station names on multiple lines that share a common transfer location is a relatively new concept on the NYCTA although some other transit systems in the country had done it earlier.

I remember hearing that the decision to add neighborhood names to most terminals in recent context was one by a senior director at Operations Planning during the early 2000s. While their later replacement did not feel as strongly about the subject, some neighborhood names, such as Harlem in Harlem-145th St were removed since the station itself was not necessarily at the heart of the neighborhood, anymore than say, 125th St was. Likewise for Lower Manhattan-Whitehall St, more appropriately FiDi-Whitehall St today anyway.

Of course, there’s still inconsistencies, and when it comes to station signage, the neighborhood names are generally not included.
