NYC Overnight Subway Service

Posted by BusRider on Sat Sep 12 10:22:01 2020

Thoughts?

Return?

I once seen a YouTube video that reported during the 1977 blackout, subway service ran 65%, if cleaning is really an issue couldn’t a modified service plan be implemented with newer (or bring back old operations that worked) line patterns to improve what has been the standard overnight service?

Cleaning=cleaning out the homeless. It has nothing to do with cleaning of the inanimate surfaces of the cars and stations, at least not primarily.

Speaking of the homeless and the subway, I'm planning on my annual rail-fanning trip to NYC later this year and really don't want to stay in one of these hotels that has been turned into a temporary homeless shelter. Is there a list somewhere?

It comes back when Cuomo say so, despite him pushing it off by decisions made by state agencies.

As Spider-Pig says, it's about the homeless. The actual train cleaning can be done while trains are stopped in terminals, or in the yards for the vast majority of trains which are laid up overnight.

If they want to continue clearing out the homeless, then shut down the system for one hour overnight, say between 3 and 4 a.m.

For those that get out of work after 1p that are not "essential" it has been a long trek home.
They have even stopped the $2.75 Uber trips for those needing more than two buses.
I had to get home one night and took me 2.5 hours just missing my connecting bus. 25 minute trip on the subway from downtown brooklyn to Homecrest.

Sure there is, but the will most be there to clear the way.

Change the ACLU-driven court rulings about vagrancy, stop leaving the mentally ill on the streets, restore a version of civil commitment, etc.
Anyone here remember NYC is the '50s? (I don't). Were there riots, homeless/addicts s--ting on the trains? I wasn't there, but I strongly suspect not.

I disagree with you about the "ACLU-driven court rulings about vagrancy." The old vagrancy laws were arbitrarily and unfairly applied. A man with long hair who fell asleep on the train (while using it for legit transport) could be deemed a vagrant and arrested. Hell, these rules were broad enough that they could be applied to anyone.

There were a lot of other shitty things about the 50s, and yes, there were addicts, but almost certainly fewer as I am fairly certain the 60s-70s saw a major rise in drug use. I think that's the major difference. Another thing was the closure of mental hospitals. These people are NOT capable of caring for themselves like typical adults.

"The old vagrancy laws were arbitrarily and unfairly applied."

I do not doubt the old laws were sometimes abused, although in the '50s there were rather few men with long hair. Even the Beatniks did not so arrange themselves.

But, simply because the old law plus the nature of things led to abuses doesn't mean we have to give up and let chaos rule. There's always a segment of society who does wan chaos and will make a considerable effort to bring it about. We don't have to give up and let them win.

Write new laws which are a harder to abuse (all laws will be abused somewhere by someone, if they can get away with it) yet still broad enough require people to respect public life. Or we can let chaos happen, then run blameshifting and more "activism" to fix what the first 2 rounds of activism broke.

Cleaning=cleaning out the homeless. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Make the 1AM-5AM closing a permanent thing. Start up express and local services at 5AM for those who need to get to work early.

Unlike many other cities, NY is a 24 hour city with work hours so varied that it basically has to reopen on a 24/7 basis after the crisis is over. Why should law abiding citizens be punished because of the failure of the governments to do their jobs and enforce the laws reasonably?

Also, if I recall, service is still operating as normal just without passengers. Considering the amount of workforce as well, it should be back soon. Definitely music venues
are key, I went to Barclays Center and the majority of the train back to Manhattan were attendees of the concert, most of the train was singing - an amazing ride!

A question does raise though, does anyone know how costly is it to operate OPTO during those times? Is there a special rate on top of the similar night differential? Thinking that may be one argument of the agency. Eliminate OPTO & the 3 to 42nd, possibly extend the Bx99 and B99 to cover the 5 & A and streamline the rest of the lines being the B, C, W, and Z do not operate.

What OPTO? THE A runs OPTO on the Rock Park shuttles only.

The 1-5 AM non passenger trains have the conductor in the first car to open a door for police and transit personnel.

People who stink unbearably should be considered a public health hazard and removed from the public for safety reasons. If quarantines of everyone due to a deadly illness are fine, then quarantines of individuals whose hygiene poses a threat to others should also be fine.

It certainly does. The foul smell is indicative of a multitude of underlying physical conditions which can be spread on the seats and handholds of the subway cars and buses and transmitted to unsuspecting passengers. If the covid germs can be spread by asymptomatic persons not wearing masks, then the various germs causing the smells can also spread a variety of diseases!
