Atlantic City Line

Posted by DieselBusFan on Mon Sep 14 12:04:12 2020

This is not a good sign at all for the AC Line: "infrastructure maintenance and track work on the Atlantic City Line will require the following temporary service adjustments..." (mid-day and weekend replacing by bus until mid-December 2020) (NJT announcement). There have been several closures of the AC Line recently for the same reasons! I don't think it takes much to figure out what is actually going on. Since COVID-19, the AC Line trains have been running just about empty. The line has just been rebuilt with new rail and ties. I really expect the next step to be permanent closure under some ruse. Maintenance blitzes were often a prelude to a final closure of the service.

I can see them cutting it back to Lindenwold, but a full abandonment? No. What kills it is its poor frequency, its circuitous route to Philadelphia, and that it doesn't directly serve Downtown Philadelphia.

There's demand for travel between Philadelphia and Atlantic City as evidenced by how busy the 551 and Greyhound buses between the two cities get, the railroad just does a poor job at catering to that demand. The 551 runs about every 30-60 minutes 24/7, and would already be dropping you off in Downtown Philadelphia by the time the train gets to the Delaware River.

In my completely fantasy world, NJ Transit's "Atlantic City Line" service would be abandoned, replaced with PATCO trains running between Downtown Philly and Atlantic City, as well as River Line trains between Trenton and Atlantic City through a new junction in Pennsauken. Foamer-ific!

I think you're overreacting.

For me I would expand service, add a second track and restore service to Cape May. One fantasy was building a branch from Absecon to serve Long Beach Island with two intermittent stops between Absecon and Barnegat Light.

If we want Center City access, send it through the CCCC and back up one of the Reading branches, or just turn it at Track 0 in Suburban if you wanna be lazy.

You'd have to get some dual modes, but that's not so bad. Maybe put in a joint order with SEPTA, to grab a few more for Norristown line extension out to Reading as well :)

Austerity's gonna be tough folks...

No. Way too uncomfortable to ride PATCO for distances that far. Bad enough that the PATCO ROW is the former PRSL line out of Camden albeit elevated (the PRSL was at grade).

River Line cars are already getting their prime movers replaced; their MDBFs are only a few thousand miles. Big waste of money; and since you mentioned that, the route of the PRR Nellie Bly was actually the NEC to Trenton, then today's River Line to Pennsauken where it joined today's ACL (but thanks to NJT, we ain't getting that back).

NJT already has the dual-power ALP-45s and they're buying newer ALP-45As. The big money there would be blown on trying to convince SEPTA to allow NJT to operate on their railroad anyhow, since by running into 30th Street's lower level they stay on Amtrak-owned rails.

Having spent money on a Pennsauken facility for transfers between the the RiverLine and the ACRL, I don't see them cutting back to Lindenwold.

About 10 years ago, NJT killed their most heavily patronized frequency on the line, an AM rush train to Philly. It has been in a downward spiral ever since. Blame disinterested management and stupid service planning.
