I never understood why the F tracks north of 47-50 St are B5 and B6 for the short distance to 57 St, where they become T1 and T2. Why didn't they start the T1 and T2 designation north of 47-50? Usually the "5" and "6" designations are for tracks not in revenue service.

Because the first section in the late '60's/early '70's to be built was the extension from 47/50th to 57/6.

Nobody who decided to call it B5/B6 is around anymore to explain their decision.

Could it possibly be because prior to the opening of 57th/6th, this short stretch was not yet revenue trackage*, only being used for layups and storage, and so was originally designated with the B5/B6 to be consistent with existing chaining designations?

*then one can ask the question, when exactly were tracks installed.

If I remember correctly the junction north of 50/6 was part of the original IND construction. I'm not sure how far the tracks actually went but I will say it's rather interesting that the distance from 53 St to mid-block between 55/56 (the southern end of the 57 St platform) is around 670 feet which is a nice length for a layup. T1/T2 may mark the start of brand new construction.

Additionally T1/T2 may have been intended to continue for the Queens super-express, which matches the situation on 8 Av where D3/D4 actually start at the 50 St junction.

It seems someone remembered this when building Archer Av because the IND tracks are D1A/D2A.

Your right. The stub end trackways were provided for in the original construction.

I doubt there was any track construction north of 49th St (the north end of the platforms of the 47-50th St Rockefeller Center station) until the mid 1960s when there was a lot of subway construction at 53rd St and north. The 57th St station opened July 1, 1968.

I remember riding up to the 57th St. station IIRC several days or so after it opened, and took maybe two or three b&W photos. I'd also made sure to ride the Canarsie line & Myrtle Chambers to get shots of the Standards that spring.

I graduated HS that May, and left for a trip to Paris on July 15th (took one roll of 24 or 36 slide film of the Metro during that August - got the Sprague cars on the open lines and a shot or two underground).

I wonder if you could notice any differences between the stub tunnel finishes and the newer ones before 57th St/6th Ave?

OK. How far did the original stubs go, north of 53rd St?

I'm sure the original stubs did not even exist north of 53 St. I remember heavy wooden timbers supporting 6th Av traffic in front of the Hilton Hotel in 1966 so that was all new subway construction from 53 St north. I doubt if there was anything other than trackways in the stubs below 53 St.

So, they might have extended as far north as 54th St?

The Hilton Hotel is on the west side of 6th Av between 53 and 54 Sts. The timbers went all the way south to 53 St, so that's where the cut and cover construction must have started.
