Looks like the Flushing ( # 7 ) line around 111th Street near the yard lead.

Queensboro Plaza looking west. Thats the Queensboro Bridge in the backround. Looks like the pic was taken shortly after 2nd Ave El service across the bridge was discontinued.

No. It was after the Flushing and Astoria lines were separated.

That was a diamond crossover. It allowed trains from Flushing to go over the 2nd Ave El and trains from Astoria to use the Steinway tunnel. The second connection, from Astoria to the Steinway tunnel, stayed in operation until 1949.

It is facing west. After the IRT Astoria service was surrendered to the BMT in 1949, the lower level platform was extended west and covered over the space where the Xover used to be. If it were possible, it would have been a good idea to retain that Xover like they did the one on the upper level to make the shop and other non revenue moves between the lines easier.

that is interesting, and it shows how they did not think much about the future back then, in my view. If I had the money available, the entire Flushing line would be re-done as an underground subway built to B division standards and the Astoria line would also be a subway with an extension to La Guardia Airport, along with a few other projects. It is likely that back in the late 1940's / early 1950's the focus was on building highways and not mass transit - gridlock, lack of parking spaces and air pollution were not even considered.

It is so easy to be an armchair general here. Most of us do it here, myself included. The Astoria line opened in 1917, twelve years before Glen Curtis Airport replaced the Gala Amusement Park. It later became North Beach and, later, NY Municipal Airport. Now, we call it LaGuardia Apt. Queens had a lot of open space, back then. Have you seen pictures around the area of the Flushing Line, too?

But with air travel being revolutionary then, it wouldn't have been a bad idea to extend the el(s) while land was relatively uninhabited.

Yes, but Robert Moses and the Depression put an end to any of those aspirations. besides, nobody thought of a train to LaGuardia Apt, back then.

like I said, they didn't think about that, only what would generate cash right at that time. Now to build such a line in these times would be very expensive, and then there is the NIMBY factor, so we might be long gone by the time many of these needed projects get built.

Also, bear in mind that the airport was much smaller, with 3 or 4 airlines flying out of it. As for projects, we will be lucky to be alive if/when the 2nd Ave subway gets built to 125/Lex., or over to 125/St Nick.
