Booth replace expired less than an month card?

Posted by Lou from Brooklyn on Wed Jan 15 15:18:27 2020

Metrocard experts, from what I can tell from MTA.INFO if my card expired 12/31/19 the booth can still transfer the money to a new card?

Well not at Kings Hwy on the Brighton, refused and gave me the dreaded envelope. Would not listen to me just said he couldn't do anything.

(He also made me wait while he wiped down every surface in the booth, must have just started his shift but he was logged in to the computer. I waited patiently did not make any issue over that)

So am I correct or am I mailing this thing in and waiting for the wheels of the bureaucracy to turn?

TIA

To elaborate: Use the MVM to refill the card. You will get an error message and the machine will offer a trade in for a new card.

Or go to another booth, or the same one with a more competent clerk.

You have a year from expiration to have the money transferred at a booth. If this jerk won't do it, report him and try another booth.

Has your MetroCard expired?

Whether Pay-Per-Ride or Unlimited Ride, every MetroCard has an expiration date. The date is located at the upper left corner on the back of the card. The expiration date is usually about one year from the date of purchase.

If your Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard expires, you have two years from the expiration date to transfer any remaining money to a new card. Within the first year after expiration, bring your expired card to any subway station and ask the agent to make the transfer. After that time, the expired MetroCard must be sent to MetroCard customer claims. Ask the station agent for a postage-paid Business Reply Envelope.

Nope MVM rejected the card as expired hence I went to the booth.

There is no other booth, have to come back at a different time.
Currently have limited mobility so I'm not walking to the Culver and the entire point of this post I don't have any accessible fare.

Yes it is expired, I believe I said that in the first post 12/31/2019 would be expired as that is listed on teh card as date of expiration.

I’ve always been able to trade in expired cards at MVMs. If some issue is preventing your card from working then the clerk may have been right about needing to mail it in.

Yeah, like "oops, the card is slightly cracked, so NFC won't work at all. If you don't have an account, you'll have to mail the card in to get a refund."

This is probably another reason why they want people to use their own payment devices.

They'll bring in the OMNY card when everyone is already using their phones, watches and credit cards. This way they'll only need one OMNY Vending machine per station and won't have to purchase and replenish stock frequently.

The transfer routine works for cards with value on them, if it's time that may be a problem.
It sounds like there was some kind of error on the card that prevented the MVM from transferring the value, because I do it all the time, i.e. I put in a expired card with zero money left & it still gives me a new card w/out the $1 fee.

I had to do the same thing a few months ago when my card expired. Machine wouldn't spit out a new one, and the token booth person gave me an envelope.

If you're going to mail it, mail it quickly. Also, double-check to make sure your card still shows the money left over.

I encountered the exact same scenario, but I waited a few months to mail it. Before I mailed it, I checked the card at a station. It said the card was an "unlimited" (I don't use unlimiteds) with no sign of the money that was on it. I mailed it anyway, and of course, I got nothing back.

I had an issue trading in empty expired and unexpired cards at booths a few months ago, back when the Seinfeld cards were in booths. Station agents seemed to be unable to do a trade in for cards that had expired unlimited ride fares on them, while I was able to trade those same cards, at least the expired ones, in machines without issues. More recently, I was told by someone that there was some kind of programming change with the last fare increase that affects trade-ins of cards that ever had unlimited rides on them in the past. The whole thing seems quirky. In the past, the only valid cards less than a year expired that I regularly could not trade in at the machine or booth have been AirTrain cards, that I'd have to trade in at an AirTrain machine, or cards with some kind of defect or error (usually cards the reader says have money on or at least ays are just expired, not "SEE AGENT" but the machine spits back). Those, I could mail in if they had money on them. I assume that PATH cards need to be traded in at PATH machines.
