The cable had been subject to frequent breakdowns and the company was unable to meet its financial obligations. Tuscarora Almanac - November 15, 1917 - The Book of First Runs Manhattan, New York Interborough Rapid Transit Company 151st Station on the 9th Avenue El opens. This will be the last new station to open on the original section of the el. Tuscarora Almanac – November 15, 1931 – The Book of First Runs Norristown, Pennsylvania Philadelphia & Western Railroad The famous Brill “Bullets”interurban cars begin service on the P & W Norristown. The Bullets were all built in 1931 and are numbered 200-209. Car 203 was destroyed in 1933 and a replacement car with the same number entered service in 1934. QT Broadway-Brighton Local via Tunnel (BMT Rt. 1). It left from Prospect Park as a passenger special. It ran nonstop to Chambers Street via the bridge and then via the tunnel to Lawrence Street. It then made all local stops to Coney Island and entered regular service later in the day. The consist was 8027-6, 8025-4, 8021-0 and 8028-9. New York Division Bulletin /November 1960 Tuscarora Almanac - November 15, 1962 - The Book of First Runs Manhattan, New York New York City Transit Authority IRT Division The lower level express platforms at the 59th Street Station of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line open today. A train of the brand new Redbirds was on hand and carried passengers to Bowling Green Station. On or about this date the first of the R-33 Redbirds begins regular service on the No. 1 Broadway - 7th Avenue Local. I was on my way home from school (Stuyvesant HS in Manhattan to home in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn) on Nov. 15, 1960 and got to ride on the R-27s on the QT-Brighton Local on the first day of service. The advertising cards were not all in place yet on the train. Big mystery of the day - what is a "QT". Prior to the R-27s, letters were only used on the IND. |

I could never figure out why they built 151 St station that late. It was only 4 blocks from the 155 St one. Ditto for 38St/6Av, three years previously. By 1917, trains were 6 or 7 cars during peak hours. |

The complete elimination of the BMT Southern Div branch lines didn’t take place till the R-32s. The Eastern Div was a different story since for some inane reason, the names Bway Bkln, Jamaica and Myrtle were not used but the JJ, J/JJ and M signs simply read Nassau St either Lcl or Exp as appropriate. Pre R-27, the only BMT line that used only its Manhattan route in its name was the 14 St Line. Considering the way the BMT routes were configured, I never could understand why the word “Bway” was included on the side signs since with the exception of the Sea Beach Line and earlier the Culver, all the Southern Div routes had services to both Bway and Nassau St. When the branch line names were eliminated from the R-32s and up the so called rationale for it was that since the other divisions didn’t include the branch lines on their signs, why should the BMT? Even though it was pointed out that the BMT was the only division that had multiple branches with a common terminal the cesspool of incompetence that passed for TA planning didn’t seem to care. It’s only recently that the TA has opted to include the branch lines on the signs of the R-46s, NTTs and earlier the retrofitted signs of the R-32s through 38s before they were scrapped. |

They posted now-iconic signs all over the BMT, "Know Your Trains at a Glance", that explained which routes went with which letters. Of course back then there were double-lettered line too, so it had Q, QB, and QT, and both T and TT (but only N and RR). |

This probably came out with the R27's in 1960. Nothing higher than the numeric R16 signs would be seen on the Eastern Division until Nov 1967.M - Nassau St Express - obviously intended for the Myrtle-Chambers train, but used for the Brighton-Nassau service (should have been "QN" ?), though one would have no idea from which of 4 Brooklyn branches the train ran on. |

Building a stop at 38th would have made no sense, so instead there was an entrance at 38th to placate the merchants. It entered onto the passageway. |

As I mentioned in my other post the J/JJ, KK, L, LL, (some of the R-27/30s had readings for both a 14 St Lcl and Exp) and M which were intended for use on the Eastern but not used until post Chrystie. All the Eastern readings except for the LL were Manhattan centric and read only “Nassau St” completely ignoring the branch line readings even on the 27/30s which still kept the branch readings for the Southern. I recall one afternoon in early 1967, the Jamaica Line was short a train and a spare train of R-32s was available and brought up from CIYd by a board crew to cover the interval. I was anxious to see what sort of signage was going to be displayed and was disappointed to see that the signs displayed “Q/Broadway Exp” rather than J. Apparently it never occurred to anyone in CIYd to check for a more appropriate reading especially since they had to have been aware of the existence of a J reading when changing signs to get to the M reading that was in use at the time. |
