Tuscarora Almanac – November 3, 1963 – The Book of Last Runs

Beacon, New York
New York State Bridge Authority

Two Hundred and twenty years of ferry service between Newburgh and Beacon comes to an end today when the ferryboats DUTCHESS and ORANGE make their final runs a little after 5 PM. The Newburgh – Beacon Bridge (current north span) had opened the day before. The New York State Bridge Authority which operated both the ferry and the bridge issued special tickets for the last day that would permit a round trip across the river using the bridge in one direction and the ferry in the other.

Three ferryboats were active at the end. DUTCHESS and ORANGE were the regular service boats while BEACON was the spare boat. DUTCHESS and ORANGE were built right next door to the Newburgh Ferry Terminal at the Thomas S Marvel Shipyard in 1910 and 1914 respectively. BEACON was built in 1921 as the LIEUTENANT FLAHERTY for service in Boston Harbor. She came to the Hudson in 1938. The DUTCHESS and BEACON were towed downriver to Witte’s Marine Yard of Staten Island for scrapping. The half sunk remains of the DUTCHESS can still be seen. (2016)
The Orange was purchased by a Myles Rosenthal and placed into a service on the East River between Whitehall Street and the World’s Fair Marina in Flushing Bay. She made only one trip on April 17, 1964 and was then laid up before being scrapped in 1965.

Several of use took a very long lunch hour that day to make the last run. It was something that we had to do.

Interesting how the last of the 'Redbirds' were retired on the exact same day, except 34 years apart, as the last of the pre-war IRT cars. And all relating to the same route on original service.

Excellent photos! Thanks for posting - brings back memories!

This was an absolutely striking livery. Completely different from anything else at the time. It's really too bad they painted them red later on. They should have been kept washed and clean with their original colors throughout their service lives.

As I recall, the tunnels under the East river of the Flushing Line were WHITE WASHED for the Worlds Fair.

Does anyone, I mean anyone also share this memory?

If so, any idea how long before the wash was covered over?

Well, since you wrote "anyone" I thought that I'd crawl out from under my rock and and second your recollection. I'm not certain how long it remained white but believe that it outlasted the second season of the fair.

Those were nice - I like the color and the TA logo. However, my favorite colors (I do not know the spec names) of this equipment are as follows:

1. Fllat, dark green
2. Redbird livery
3. Flat gray
4. Blue
5. White

This is my opinion and as such it is fact. Express Rider and Q4 are wrong and need to redact or retract one of those things their respective posts.

I suppose transit decided to paint over the best factory paint ever because they were covered with graffiti.

There were red cars before there were red-birds.
Bluebirds were prewar Clark equipment that ran for a time on the BMT before being melted down into airplanes.

I did not think that any of the R36 Blue cars ever became redbirds. I think that it was only ML cars that were mad into redbirds.

But of course, I could be wrong. What the heck.

But TA had previously painted some R-10's in the Bluebird color scheme sometimes in the 60's (I remember going somewhere with my mother as a young child in the late 60's or early 70's and riding one heading up Central Park West, which we rarely ever took).

Thanks. I missed the last Redbird run- I didn't know when it would occur. But as I knew the end was coming, I got one last revenue ride myself, on 10/6/03.

Right through November and December of 2003, I saw evening scrap moves of Redbirds on the Broadway BMT (8th Street) , around 19:30 - 20:00. One pair at a time sped through the station on the Brooklyn-bound express track. I guess they crossed to the BMT at Queensboro Plaza, and somewhere near De Kalb Avenue, crossed over to the 6th Avenue IND, then switch to the 8th Ave IND at West 4th, for the final run to 207th.

That's my guess, anyway. I suppose it's entirely possible that some or all of them may have gone all the way to Coney Island and laid over for a few hours or days before the trip of doom to 207th.

Lion still has doubts.... There were R-36 MLs and R-36 WFs

I think that all of the WFs were gonne because of body rot before Red Birds appeared.

The WF cars were never called 'Blue Birds' because the 'birds' did not appear until later.

The TR-10 racing stripe scheme was basically the same as on the R-36 WFs. It wasn’t necessarily the redbird scheme that loused up the paint scheme on the R-36s so much as the desire of the MTA to paint all its rolling stock to look like a cheap imitation of the R-42s 44s and 46s.

The R-33 singles and the WF R-36s eventually were all painted in the fox red paint scheme although as I mentioned in my other post, when the MTA took over, it decided to paint all its rolling stock in the platinum mist and blue scheme which didn’t last too long due to graffiti. The Redbird program started back in the 1980s under David Gunn and was used on all LAHT cars with the exception of 10 mainline R-33s and the GOHed R-10s which were done in green. In the interim, a few IRT cars both mainline and Flushing were done in an all white paint scheme supposedly to make it easier for the yardmasters to spot a graffitied car and get it washed right away, but that didn’t work too well.

A few mainline cars?
Most of the IRT fleet was painted that horrible white with black trim.
Some R16 even received that before going to the chopping block.

I think I may be the only person besides Ronan himself who actually likes the gray and blue stripe MTA paint scheme. Too bad the cars were vandalized so badly just as the paint scheme came out.

I never liked the gray-blue scheme out on the railroad, but I must admit they look rather sharp on my HO layout.
