Besides the higher clearance which they report, isn't the main advantage of the new bridge that it has three tracks instead of two? Isn't that why the old bridge was replaced?

While these innovative construction techniques are impressive, this particular bridge really called for something more. Nassau Blvd is four lanes on either side of the bridge but narrows to two lanes. The new bridge is no different in that regard, which was a huge compromise but saved probably a lot of money and was doable in only a weekend of no service. Still, there was a squandered opportunity to provide room for four lanes, and it probably won't come again in anyone's lifetime. The one thing I also question about these seemingly simple upgrades is the condition of the existing abutments, which apparently are reused mostly as is-- and if any serious problems were uncovered after the old bridge is removed, what then? There would be no time to correct such problems properly, so most likely they would be addressed with a lick and a promise, or a coverup.

They didn't just show up on Saturday and have it done by Sunday and hope that the new bridge would fit. Without knowing anything more about it, I'd guess that there was months of work being done there in preparation of doing the lift and drop. I'm sure part of that work was examining the existing structure. Yes it is still possible that something would not go smoothly but you do everything you can in advance to ensure that it does.

The worst case scenario happened in the Seattle area when they rebuilt the I-90 floating bridge. Part of the old bridge was to be reused, but some genius decided that they needed to store contaminated runoff water from the construction somewhere, so they put it into the concrete pontoons that were to float and support the bridge. A storm filled the pontoons the rest of the way and they sunk.

And of course, the sinking caused all of the contaminated water to be released into the lake anyway.

They sure did make sure the new bridge would fit. The old bridge wasn't going back in because someone made some miscalculations.

It was now or never.

Very interesting. Very similar to what was done to replace the South Shore
.Torrence Ave. here in Chicago.

And that too.

I lived in Seattle in the 80s and would both drive and bike across the original bridge from time to time, and also the 520 bridge. You couldn't feel anything while crossing, but on a bike you knew you were pretty low down.

Only drove across 520, no bike lane at the time.

Not knowing Chicago that well, I punched Torrence Ave. Chicago into Google Earth. Seconds of scrolling found which rail crossing we were looking at. A few clicks of the historical imagery bar found the 3/12/2012 image with the piers close to complete. In an empty field to the southwest were pads suitable for assembling a bridge. In the 4/2/2013 image the pads are covered with construction supplies and the bridge is in place. The current view shows that the avenue was subsequently depressed under the freight railway that is at ground level. The video shows the original grade level avenue being used as a path for moving the bridge. After it was placed we can see the crews putting the crossing lights and the freight railroad's signals back up. Researching this answer was even faster than writing this post.

I find Chicago to do a better job with fixing its infrastructure than we do. I mean, just looking at many of the line and station rehab projects CTA has done over the past couple decades on Chicago-l.org, I was quite impressed with what I saw in the “after” pictures vs the “before.” They’ve even relocated station platforms in such a way that I think could serve as a model for building better connections between our trains, such as if they rebuild the Rockaway Beach Branch (RBB) in Queens.

One of the key things for a rehabbed RBB to be a success is to have convenient connections to the bus and train lines that cross it, including the A at Liberty Ave and the J at Jamaica Ave. Currently, the branch passes under both line just out of reach of their nearest stations. Relocating both lines’ 104th Street stations closer to where they cross over would make the branch that much better of an option. But that would require the MTA to make real effort to work with the community and property owners and not let NIMBYs run the show.

I was giving him a hint that it's not that hard. In the SMS 25th Anniversary thread he asked 3 times for info that others had already answered via links within the thread.

It isn't just a matter of whether it fits-- it's also a matter of whether the existing abutments are sound. There's only so much that one can see without actually removing the old bridge. I can imagine removing the old bridge to discover that the abutments need more help than can be accomplished in two days-- and then it isn't just a matter of putting back the old bridge until repairs can be made.

Perhaps they can do ultrasound and/or x-ray testing of the abutment before lifting out the old bridge?
