Re: [VIDEO] New Tech Helps MTA Replace An Entire Bridge In One Weekend

Posted by Andrew Saucci on Wed Oct 9 20:48:24 2019, in response to [VIDEO] New Tech Helps MTA Replace An Entire Bridge In One Weekend, posted by Bill Newkirk on Wed Oct 9 19:26:43 2019.

While these innovative construction techniques are impressive, this particular bridge really called for something more. Nassau Blvd is four lanes on either side of the bridge but narrows to two lanes. The new bridge is no different in that regard, which was a huge compromise but saved probably a lot of money and was doable in only a weekend of no service. Still, there was a squandered opportunity to provide room for four lanes, and it probably won't come again in anyone's lifetime. The one thing I also question about these seemingly simple upgrades is the condition of the existing abutments, which apparently are reused mostly as is-- and if any serious problems were uncovered after the old bridge is removed, what then? There would be no time to correct such problems properly, so most likely they would be addressed with a lick and a promise, or a coverup.
