They didn't just show up on Saturday and have it done by Sunday and hope that the new bridge would fit. Without knowing anything more about it, I'd guess that there was months of work being done there in preparation of doing the lift and drop. I'm sure part of that work was examining the existing structure. Yes it is still possible that something would not go smoothly but you do everything you can in advance to ensure that it does.

The worst case scenario happened in the Seattle area when they rebuilt the I-90 floating bridge. Part of the old bridge was to be reused, but some genius decided that they needed to store contaminated runoff water from the construction somewhere, so they put it into the concrete pontoons that were to float and support the bridge. A storm filled the pontoons the rest of the way and they sunk.
