[PHOTOS] LIRR MP-54 #4153 At CT Trolley Museum

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Mar 17 10:58:26 2019

The CT Trolley Museum brought this gem out for us as we were a bus charter group from NYC.
I was told they normally did not run this car because of electrical consumption.
For those who never rode these cars I can describe the bull & pinion gearing sound as close to our "arnines.
Brake release sounded like the Lackawanna MU's and Reading "Blueliners".

It has been there longer than it ran in LIRR service (1930-1971). The M-1 replacement is now gone too.

Too bad none of the arch roof type exist anymore.

This car's bulls eye light reflectors are a little different than most.

I remember riding in these cars as a kid. They rode like tanks & they would really rock & roll between Penn Sta & Jamaica doing around 65 Mph on the old "stick" rail that was used back then.

Someone finally got that museum to talk to them about that? I know there was discussion on RR.net about it. If you have any info, I'd love to know, I've always had a soft spot for the 54, even though I never saw one run...

I was there 2 years ago. Had some new paint. A retired LIRR engineer was working on it. But the museum's policy since seems to de-emphasize it and some other equipment.

That MP-54 is impossible to run on the subway due to clearance issues and other things. It would be nice if either the museums in Oyster Bay and Riverhead, but probably would never happen.

This MP-54 if acquired either museum would have to pay the Connecticut Trolley Museum and there's the moving cost too. Now there's money they probably don't have. I don't think either museum is interested in bringing her home, but that's my guess.

And the 3rd MP54A1 is in Syracuse at the Fair Grounds.

When it got its rebuild around 1961, they did a cheaper job. They replaced the chandeliers with incandescent encasements of aluminum and glass, but never got the narrowed clerestory with bulls eye track lighting.

I was in it last year.

The CT one in 2017 when I was there did not look al that bad, paint-wise, though it had nasty horizontal rot along the base. There are asbestos issues with that.

LIRR did offer an MP54C (arch roof) to the Riverhead group. It had been an Alcohol car. They refused it to due asbestos oozing out the sides. Sadly, all arch roof MP54's are now extinct. The Sag Harbor or Watermill car (#4900) was the last one and carted off to scrap about 10 years ago.

The 4100 and 4800-4900's were still in pretty good shape and reliable in 1970 and 1971.

There are about 8 P54D coaches on several tourist railroads, all equivalent of the MP54D1.

The newest LIRR MP54's were delivered in 1930 with the first third coming between 1908 and 1915. Pretty sure even the newest ones used the same ~1908 vintage construction techniques. By 1970 their mechanical condition just had to be absolutely abysmal.

The NY Central MU's met a similar fate. I'm sure there was a lot of short shortsightedness within the MTA and preservation community at the time. In the 1980's when it was clear that the EL and RDG MU's represented the last pools of "classic" style passenger equipment left, the tourist train industry purchased them en-masse.

There's always "shortsightedness" when the government runs things.

And if the Lackawanna MUs could still have been in running order after 54 years, why would the MP54s be in bad shape after just forty?

All their literature from that period indicated that they wished that state taxation and regulation would have gone away after WWII, FWICS.

LIRR Mp54's were built between 1908 and 1930. 2/3rd got a rebuild in the 1950's.

Ronan ordered junking of a lot of accumulated and rare spare parts in 1967, as well as deferred maintenance.

They also scrapped 23 year old double deckers, though they had structural issues, and 19 year old MP70 "Wyer" cars (20 of them).

Everything other than a Pullman-Standard MP70, MP72, P72, T72, and MP75 were 2nd hand and all gone by March 1979.

The ex-B&M P-74B coaches were the last to go, although several Parlor Observation cars lingered into the 1980's. MN commandeered the 2 Phoebe Snow cars. The ex-B&O car wound up in private hands.

I always appreciated the fact that, up until the M1's, all the electric cars could MU together.

The last MP72/MP75 in MU service was October 1973, exactly two years after the last MP54.

From then on, the entire MU fleet was compatible until the M-7, though there was some initial issues with the M-3 and M-1.

Interesting, thanks for the info! I always thought MN got the Phoebe Snow cars directly from EL, not from the LIRR.
