The newest LIRR MP54's were delivered in 1930 with the first third coming between 1908 and 1915. Pretty sure even the newest ones used the same ~1908 vintage construction techniques. By 1970 their mechanical condition just had to be absolutely abysmal. The NY Central MU's met a similar fate. I'm sure there was a lot of short shortsightedness within the MTA and preservation community at the time. In the 1980's when it was clear that the EL and RDG MU's represented the last pools of "classic" style passenger equipment left, the tourist train industry purchased them en-masse. |
