I didn't realize Myrtle/Chambers service went back so far. I rode those same Standards on that service in the 1960's!

I last rode a Standard in early 1969 on the Culver Shuttle.

Thanks as always!!

Unfortunate about the Lower Montauk stations. Though lightly used (to be generous), if they'd been preserved, maybe today the case for upgrading the line- either by LIRR or to subway standards, would be stronger.

As for the 148-Lenox Terminal's opening, I wish I cold remember it, but at the time I had 10 more weeks of being carried by my Mom. So while she used to be very up on all things transit, this probably wasn't first 'n foremost on her mind...LOL.!!

Two weeks to the day before my birth!! I'll leave it to everyone else to determine if that belongs in the Book of First Runs or The Book of Wrecks, LOL.

Main: You were not alone. That one kind of slipped under the railfan radar. We were all so busy discussing Chrystie Street and its aftermath that we didn't realize what was going on in upper Manhattan.

Myrtle/Chambers was the last stronghold of the Multis. After school, I used to travel from the Bronx to Met just to ride them because there was a M/M who would let me ride in the cab which was normally set to transverse.

Summer 1969, I believe. That was the last route they ran on. By then, it was known as the LL, though no Standards displayed an "LL" sign.

The final run was made on August 4, 1969 on the "M" Myrtle Av-Nassau St Line 9BMT Rt 10). The consist was (s) 2531-2532-2533, 2466-2649-2467(n).During the summer they had run on both the "LL" and "M" lines.

The second half of 1969 was a sad one for New York railfans. We said "goodbye" to the Standards in August. Adieu to the "Q" Types in October. Finally in early November the mighty Lo-V's and Steinways had their last "curtain call".

Thanks for setting me straight on this. In 1969, I was a toddler. And...you forgot to mention loss of the Myrtle south of Broadway.

Railroad NORTH, NORTH, NORTH of Broadway. Look at the track numbers!!!! Odd numbers southbound even numbers northbound.

PWN3D!

The Eastern Division is obviously more of an east-west sort of thing, but much of it is gone and the rest of the subway is north-south, so the ED has to be shoehorned in. Myrtle West is Broadway is accurate and unambiguous.

yes the compass south western part of the Myrtle was technically north of what's left of the Myrtle. The PRR called WAS to NYP trains EB, but for me growing up around DC, NYC was obviously north.
And for total BS, the Southern Pacific defined toward San Francisco (HQ location) as WB, away EB. So a train from Portland to Oakland (ferry/later bus connection to SF) was a WB, but compass north to Portland was an EB.

Actually, Myrtle Avenue runs East/West. So whatever RR orientation is, the structure was demolished west of Broadway.

The old rule was that any line that passed through Brooklyn enroute to Manhattan was to be considered northbound regardless of its point of origin and the tracks are numbered accordingly. It does make sense since had the Fulton St el been connected to the BMT subway at Ashland Pl it would have been using the northbound tracks of the 4 Av abd Bway subways to access Manhattan. As it is even now, the A line while somewhat physically southbound lvg Lefferts since it is northbound on the principal 8 Av Line in Manhattan. The original KK and K services originating at Jamaica and E/Pky were also actually northbound since they operated on the northbound tks of the iND 6 Av line. The only reason that the Jamaica (QJ) Line and later the M Line were changed to S/B lvg Jamaica and Met was to eliminate confusion when the trains operated in the Southern Division where they were truly southbound. With the removal of the M from the southern Div and its routing into the IND it is now back to being what it was always supposed to be, northbound lvg Met. Also now that the J is also removed from the Southern [Div and unlikely to return, it should be redesignated northbound to Broad and southbound to Jamaica like its supposed to be to match the rest of the BMT Eastern.
