The best we can hope for is that AMTK goes belly up, and then NY-NJ can take over the assets and rebuild the tunnels and bridges to their hearts content, with no opportunity for the fed to stop them.

'Course you gotta use your own money for that, but then at least it will happen.

After all--- this is the liberal east coast where all money is free.

We could scrap the federal system and establish a confederation of fifty states. Each state would stand on its own and be totally self-sufficient. Currently the "blue" states subsidize the "red" states when comparing tax revenues and federal disbursements to states. I wonder how that might work.

as long as the GOP continues to spend billions on DOD junk while refusing to tax the overly rich, they can pretend there is no money foir actually useful infrastructure or social services. What will the tunnels cost/ Even at full corrtuption rates (50% BS, 50% actual results) were talking reducing the un needed F35s by maybe half a dozen or so. Of course that will infuriate both the DOD vendors who live off these sales, and their bought pols who can ALWAYS find money for their patrons.

As to money being free it was the GOP majority which spent "off budget" funds on the Afghan and Iraq misadventures. And if you pay few taxes (the oligopolists) but control the spending, what's the problem? Paraphrasing Ms. Leona Helmsley about paying taxes--oh, those are only for the little people. There is plenty of m,oney, it just needs to be expropriated from the tax evading super rich.

You'll see Amtrak go belly up (or the Govt fond a way to find funding. I

And Amtrak will in turn deny the MTA use of their trackage and LIRR now has to terminate trains at Woodside, Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal.

I don't think that would rally solve anything.

8 tracks to itself..no sharing with AMTRAK OR NJ TRANSIT.

Though Im sure they cannot route all of their services to the new spot..Im quite sure they so understand that fully 3/3rds of Could use Grand Central comfortablely.
One of the reasons the Atlantic Branch is going full crossboro shuttle is the aboves increased service requirements.

Under normal circumstances, the part of the country that the President comes from receives a large amount of federal money for local projects which was the case in the 1930s under the FDR administration with WPA (or some sort of federal) money going towards parts of the IND. The difference is that while both are from NY, the state supported FDR in both the 1932 and 1936 elections whereas NY voted against Trump so the Donald isnít about to help out a state that didnít choose to support him.

No, no, no. You have to hurt Trump where it hurts. I say use eminent domain on all of Trump's properties in New York State to build parks. He won't even miss them, since he spends all his time in Mar-a-Lago. Hell, maybe we can even set up a swing bridge across the Hudson, where the West Side yards used to be. It'll be really low, but what's the tallest ships north of midtown? Circle Line?

Tick Tock gang...once again, transportation policy ain't a priority, no matter which party is in power.

Politics aside, if Amtrak owns it, then Amtrak is responsible for maintaining it. I owned an apartment building for quite a few years and if something needed to be fixed or replaced I did the work, not my tenants. Further, I didn't expect any assistance of any kind from them. They paid me rent for my services & to provide a decent living environment. Since the Feds (Amtrak) hold title to all this, it is the Landlord's OBLIGATION to maintain the property. Additionally, this is not something new. The concrete was deteriorating long before the seawater accelerated the process.

It is just another piece of evidence to add to the countless pieces that illustrate the abject incompetence of both houses of Congress to solve the Amtrak funding problem. I fear that even the major disruption that the breach of these bores would cause to the NATIONAL economy won't teach these losers to take the disaster that is the NEC cost shell game seriously.

The first thing this "liberal" wants to do is eliminate religious tax exemptions. That alone would pay for the tunnel and update the entire MTA. But let's give them credit for what they'd pay for. "This new subway car was purchased with the taxes paid by the Episcopal Diocese of New York." LOL
