If I remember there was a similar bridge between the 2 Wanamaker buildings downtown.

I believe Woolworth’s and Horn & Hardart’s are similar in that while they no longer directly operate stores, they still exist as real estate holding companies.

Along with the “& Brew” restaurants, I recall a similar shop at 49 St & Bway called “Frank ’n Stein."

I was indeed engaging in a little dry humor when I characterized that as "redevelopment"... :)

As for the side drug store, I'll try to check that out..

The GWB bus terminal was to have had a Bohack’s on the first floor but when the terminal opened in 1963 there was no Bohack's and the super market that did open there was an A & P.

Horn and Hardart operated several Burger Kings and Bojangles into the 90's.

I don't believe there were a lot of Bojangles here in New York but they still survives out west.

Just like the Carrols chain did - they were a decent burger chain in parts of the East outside the city, and was a lot of smallish/medium sized cities first fast food - and they were pretty good. As the 70s started happening, though, the big boys started making inroads, so they made a deal with BK, and turned quite a few Carrols into Burger Kings.
They are now one of the top 2 or 3 franchisees in the BK company. And the company is still called Carrols Development Corp.

My very first job was at a BK just remodeled from a Carrols (40 years ago!)

Pergament Properties still exists as a real estate company; one of its holdings is a former Pergament on the corner of Grand Avenue and Merrick Road in Baldwin.

Vornado Realty Trust rose from the ashes of the Two Guys department store chain.

The new kid on that block is Seritage Growth Properties, which was spun off of Sears and K-Mart.

Yes, Alexanders still owns the property in my hometown of Paramus, NJ. It does not own anything in the Bronx. However, it owns 3 properties in Rego Park and an apartment building in Queens.

The big score was the development of the Lex Ave site, they developed the building that houses the Bloomberg HQ. (For reference, Vornado, a huge REIT, has a controlling interest)

Exactly. I remember when that happened as what was Finast (a long-gone chain in New York that survived under that name elsewhere for decades afterwards) on 79th and York become Daitch Shopwell in 1981 or so and The Food Emporium shortly after that (with that location now a Duane Reade, another Shopwell on 1st Avenue between 71st and 72nd also became The Food Emporium around that time and I believe is still there).

At the ones I get to (2 on Qns Blvd, one at Bell and Northern) I find the originals to be pretty good, and have not noticed any real change. That being said, if it is really busy, you may have an inexperienced crew rush it a little, and that results in a less than optimum product. That would technically be a quality isue, but not from the item itself.

Still the same good old Murder Burgers (at least the ones I have been to) in Queens and Long Island although it has been several months.

My wife has relatives from Cali who have to visit one whenever they come and visit. They usually take some frozen back with them.

I remember those neon "don't walk" signs. As I remember it, they were only used for crossing the primary street (in this case, 6th Avenue). They would not be used for the lesser street- (West 32). The lesser street either had no pedestrian signal or one lit with incandescent bulbs.

Little banks often provide better service and lower fees for everything. But when people see that there's not a "First Bank of MainR36" on every street corner, they gravitate towards BofA and the like. Very hard to compete with that.

I don't think it was Tad's, but I know of a few very large vendor's it has happened to, particularly (but not exclusively) in Europe. Firstly, it is not the negatively perceived product that it is in the US in many parts of the world, so it is not an uncommon product. It has happened more in processed product (like hamburger or hot dog) because a small amount of adulteration is much harder to notice.

It's not too easy to see from a distance, but once you get closer, the red-brick facade (patterned after the main Pathmark store) stands out from the new glass-and-steel building.
