That I remember from 1980.

As I remember, there actually was a Circus stand (the one that sold hot dogs in Penn Station in the late 1970's-early '80s) in that passageway, but it was closed the one and only time I went through there.

JACK has been a west coast chain for many years. They used to be on the east coast but left in the '70s.

There used to be one at Rockefeller Center. We had lunch there on April 30, 1967 after visiting the Empire State Building. We were trying to decide where to go next and I said it didn't matter as long as we took the subway. My father suggested going to Coney Island, saying it was an hour-long ride. That sealed the deal right then and there, and a short time later we were on a D train via the Culver line to Stillwell Ave.

This LION does not know. It started after the Sandy Flood... But if ewe buy Nathan's Franks in the supermarket, it has a plant and a different company name on the package.

Their ads and signs on the store a few years ago claims "New Flavor same great tradition." The flavor is NOT as good as of yore, and is no longer worth a special trip to CI.

I think John Morell is the processor for the supermarket packaged hot dog products. They offer a bunch of different "options" beyond the original. Needless to say, skinless, or low fat, are not going to be close. I'm in CI two nights a week for 5 months a year for the Catholic High School Hockey League that plays at the rink a few blocks away so it isn't a special trip for me.

But like most similar operations, consistency across franchises is lacking
Generally, the ones at the airports are terrible ones, that just sell the skinless dogs, and nothing else. Others, can be quite good: the one at PS is surprisingly good, the ones on the Thruway between NYC and Albany are good, as is the one at Cheesequake on the GSP. They seem to have to have the commitment to actually follow the company details.

That's my point. Depending on the management of the company who controls the clusters of franchises, and the strength of the brand owner in enforcing standards you see a much different result delivered. Same thing with the fries.

I don't have a European credit card.

In case you were wondering how American cards work in chip and pin land, it prints a signature slip instead, or if it's a TVM or something, it just works and doesn't ask for a PIN. I always used my phone to pay in Europe because then it didn't prompt for a signature. Meanwhile, some readers offered to pay in EUR or USD. I always went for EUR as my bank has better exchange rates.

Japan is very tourist friendly, but yes, the average ATM will not take a western card, and very few places will take western (or any) credit cards. However, there are three common brands of ATM that will (with the first two readily available at the airports):
1. The post office Japan Post (which is also Japan's largest bank).
2. 7-Eleven (really their subsidiary 7th Bank, but they are in all the convenience stores). Some Lawson's (another convenience chain) also do, I found these through trial and error.
3. American banks but these are the hardest to find. There's a Citi in Shinjuku which was the first non-post office ATM I found that worked.

There's also Travelx which is a total ripoff, never use those, because it always forces you into their BS currency exchange rate.

It is worth noting that Chinese tourists can use significantly more ATMs than westerners (mainly Mizuho ATMs which annoyingly are the 2nd most common).

As for credit cards, a large number of Japanese retailers gave a collective F.U. to credit card fees and simply do not accept them, and the country is safe enough that carrying around the equivalent of $5,000 cash in your wallet has never been unwise. They instead use in-house debit systems like EDY, transit passes, and now mobile wallets to pay for things at stores / vending machines. It has gotten to the point where the credit card companies are giving merchants money to get them to accept their cards. Hasn't helped much, the same places that always took credit (big chains) still do and the ones that don't still don't (virtually anything else). Hell, at the airport I had to pay the extra luggage fee of ¥7500 (at the time around $80) in cash, after I'd already spent my last large bills of yen. I had to run to currency exchange then back to the luggage counter, and still ended up giving her a bunch of ¥100 coins...

if it's a TVM or something, it just works and doesn't ask for a PIN

Australia and Japan it works the opposite way. If your credit card has no PIN, it will not work at a TVM. My bank-issued credit card (R.I.P. First Niagara) is actually a chip-and-pin card which ended up being the only one I could use down under to recharge my Opal card. Key Bank who bought out First Niagara cannot reissue them, so I might be screwed once it expires (or hopefully by then someone else will be as forward thinking).

Wainrite's was a large single level store on Kissena Blvd and 71st Ave. It was one of the first "discount stores" with very little selling at list price, in an era when that was much less common. The store carried a very wide range of merchandise, set up in departments or areas. There warehouse was the full basement. Today, it is a National Wholesale liquidator's, and the basement is a selling floor with an elevator and escalator, they warehouse off site and get large truck deliveries, since they have multiple stores
