Given the state of Metro, this is not a brilliant move IMHO.

Believe me, the general consensuses in the Washington area is no love for Jackie Jeter and ATU 689.

How long are they supposed to wait for a contract? The last one expired 2 years ago. No raise. All they'll get is a lousy 2% anyway.

Of course, why should management negotiate when the law is on their side?

It sounds like the terms of the expired contract are not being followed. Sounds like a free for all down there with labor vs. management.

As John said, the TWU isn't held in high regard by the riding public or the public in general. They may not hold WMATA in high regard either, but I suspect the TWU (and Jackie Jeter especially) will have to shoulder whatever fallout comes of this if they end up going on strike. Even if the union is successful in pushing Wiedefeld out of his job, with recent changes to the board and other developments, the TWU will be the sole constant over the years. If Metro doesn't turn around then, it will be quite clear who wasn't an innocent party...

Whether union officials or rank and file, the WMATA workers are held in low regard because they were/are a large share of the problems at Metro.

How about converting WMATA to air-assisted bikeways? You pops yer bike in the tunnel, and a tailwind pushes you along at roughly 30 mph. Exit ramps lead into the stations, with wind reduction on the ramps. You can pedal to go a bit faster, but there's a minimum speed so you don't create a bike pileup, at least not by design.
Now when you get outta da station, you're already on wheels for yr last couple miles.

No, I favor trains--flanged steel wheels on steel rails. And if were back in the DC area, where I was raised, my late mother's house is a multimile ride from either the Rockville or Wheaton stations--about halfway on the Ride On bus. Besides, I have bicycled in both rain and snow when delivering the Washington Star; not interested in doing that at my age.

No snow undergound!

// I couldn't do that in every day conditions either, also too old. I wrote that slightly in jest, but mostly out of frustration with the enormous waste that is the WMATA. They had a fine system and they cr-pped on it.

hmmm... bicycle rims are metal and have flanges. Ya know, bikes in a drafting line are like a train.

Union workers are always held in low regard at transit agencies because whatever goes wrong is their fault and they take the brunt of passenger bitching because they are the frontline employees, "the face" of the system.

I think they deserve a nice wage increase because of their productivity.

They are supposed to press a button and let the train run observing the roadway. For YEARS they have been forced into manual operation for their entire workday, everyday, plus operate doors.

Both are debatable, They have always had to operate the doors to some level or another.

Me thinks the wheels on the rent a bikes are not even wide enough to fit over one of the rails.

I suspected you were. As to WMATA ever having a nice system, no. The list of design/operation mistakes, let alone the toxic worker and mgmt culture, are legion, and fares are outrageous. WMATA needs a total GOH of both the system and the humans. A tall order for ANY GM/board.

Yeah, if one takes the proposal literally, there are a dozen such issues.
There actually is a railbike apparatus, it works on standard rails. It would obviously be useless once off the tracks.
But in any case, with the WMATA shut down, the subway rails can go and be replaced with thinner bike rails or, more practically, bikeways of to-be-determined design, 2 or 3 wide per trackway. That 30mph tailwind (to be created by large fans) would make for a fast, low-sweat ride... except that my proposal is a joke.

But less of a joke than paying people $100K/yr to fake inspections and waltz out of their train without setting the parking brake.

As one that watched the build out of the railroad almost from the beginning the only design mistake was not building the three 90 degree transfer to the same generous dimensions.

The only operational mistake was never procuring enough rolling stock to fully exploit the capabilities of the signaling and train control system.

I had TWU on my mind because of something related to my day job. I meant ATU.
