They would then only need to extend the non-relaying side of the platforms. Even if some eastern division route gets 9 or 10 car trains, if the relay is needed for a planned service disruption whatever route can be cut back to either 4+4 or a single 5 car unit for that night/weekend.

A monument with ancient sewer, water, and who-knows-what. Some of them date to before the Dual Contracts of 1913, the year the station was opened. Some of those lines have been re-routed or closed up and forgotten, complicated by the sheer size of that "Monument".

They have to fix the leaks at Chambers St first. It will take a long time to determine the source of those leaks. Next, comes the contracts for the repairs. Then, the work, itself. Remember how long it took to fix the new South Ferry station? Better off with a temporary wall that can be replaced in a few years.

Offer the empty platform to a private concern to build a fancy restaurant there. Some glass windows at the platform edge and you could do something nice with it, and earn rent besides.

Some years back there were plans to do that with the abandoned 18th Street station on the Lexington Avenue line. Nothing ever became of the plans.

If there is a 10-9 at W4th at 4pm on a weekday, and the M train is 9 cars, how are you going to relay it at Chambers St when you can't at Broad Street since those stub tracks are limited too and have the J/Z every 5 minutes ?

Like they do anywhere else there isn't a convenient relay - send one or two to Brooklyn 9th Ave, route some onto the express tracks after B-Lafayette, relay one or two with the J, short turn one or two at Essex st. That relay is one of the least important extra relays out there, as far as emergency turnbacks go.

The way the interlocking is set up, and probably would still be even if the platforms are extended, is that a train could go into J4 tk, and return right back from the station without having to relay.

The problem with what passes for MTA planning is that many of the planners come from “Toonerville Trolley” systems that are primarily 2 track lines with few if any switches between terminals, so if any switch is not used 24/7, they want to remove it. When the Essex St master tower was first installed, it was planned to have all 4 tracks of the Centre St Line go through Canal St into Chambers was was originally intended when the line was constructed. The route of the tracks was installed on the model board but taped over like 76 St used to be on Euclid’s board. If the 4 tracks had been retained, there would not only have been an easier path to the Chambers turnback but canal could also have been used to turn back if needed. Instead of increasing flexibility, the cesspool of incompetence that passes for MTA planning and management took away what flexibility was already in place.

From a friend,
All underground stations are pressure washed on a regular basis. It is done during overnight hours by a team of cleaners known as Mobile Wash.
On platforms they use a push type broom to apply soap and use the broom to scrub the soap.
They then use a pressure washer using hot water from their truck parked on the street to remove the soap. They drag hoses down the street stairs except in some renovated stations where there is a mobile wash connection cabinet for their pressure wash and the truck connects to the pipes at street level
Lastly they use squeegees to push the water to drains and apply an odor remover and an anti slip treatment if the platform is tiled.
For side platforms they apply soap to the tile and follow steps 2 and 3.
Tiled walls for Island platforms are done by a team of cleaners called Track Tile Cleaners
They stand on the roadbed (With flagging and third rail protection) and use a push type broom to apply soap and then use the broom to scrub the tile
They rinse the tiles regular hoses. Yes- all stations have hose connections for hoses
Routine cleaning of tiled platforms is done by Cleaners called Heavy duty Cleaners (HDC) using a scrubber machine.

Whale... In days of old, when GRS ruled the roost, it was necessary to remove unused switches in order to free up frame space for newer turnouts.

See, this is how I had to do it when I wanted to free up a lever on my GRS frame...

Switche can still be used, but MOW would have to remove the bar, and tower personnel would have to move and flag the points.

Usually if there was any possibility for expansion, the GRS (and US&S machines for that matter) would have spare spaces and in some cases even spare levers in case new switches and/or signals were added. The old Roosevelt Ave tower on the IND had actual spare levers to control the never installed switches and signals leading to the upper level. By the way, prior to the opening of the 6 Av Line, there was a GRS machine at Lexington Av to control the Xover at that location. Although the machine was removed when 5 Av tower opened, the original model board remained in the old tower for many years and I assume was probably removed when the new signaling was installed. My only question is what happened to the old interlocking machine itself? I can’t think of any location on the IND that opened after 1940 that could have used an interlocking machine only equipped for a diamond Xover. The only possibility I can think of is that considering the timeline, it may have been utilized to control the Xover at Bridge/Jay St on Myrtle which was installed after the Myrtle and Lex els were shortlined to that station. Another mystery is what became of the original Model 2 GRS machine from 6Av/14 St which was no longer needed when the line was extended to 8 Av. The 8 Av machine was a brand new Model 5 like the one at Broad St. I can’t think of any location where the machine could have been installed unless that one was held for use at Bridge/Jay St instead of the one I previously mentioned.

The really good exterminators know that rats are intelligent creatures. I watched one company put baited but unset rat traps into shoe sized cardboard boxes and let the rats eat undisturbed for a week. They rebaited the traps daily, so the rats considered them to be a regular food source. After a few days of this they baited and set the traps and SNAP! No more rats.

Alberta Province, Canada have no rats whatsoever. If they think they discovered one, it is true emergency and it is eradicated immediately. A wolf would not care.
