I think that's a good idea. At your advanced age you need all the sleep you can get.

Two observations. There were color postcards issued depicting the opening of the IRT to Bkln which depicted a Gibbs car painted green. AFAIK, the early gibbs cars were Tuscan red except for the very last group which were painted grey like the Lo-Vs for the 100th anniversary since the IRT felt that it was too costly to keep removing the steel dust and repainting the cars. Also in the photo of Westchester and St Ann’s Ave there is only elevated type 3rd rail instead of the dual subway and el 3rd rail which became standard IRT practice in later years in places where there was joint subway and el operation. Also it was pretty much IRT practice to name their towers for the closest street intersection to the actual tower location. In the case of the first tower in the photo it has always been called “Brook Tower” even though Brook Ave is actually a block west of the tower location and the tower probably should have been called “St Ann’s Tower."

Maybe the IRT installed the subway style third rail later ?

From what I understand, when the Westchester Avenue branch was opened, the 2nd & 3rd Avenue Els provided the service for approximately a year until the subway tunnel under the Harlem River was completed.

It’’s quite possible but it really wasn’t needed since the BMT functioned perfectly well with both subway and el equipment using el type 3rd rail. Considering the IRT was a cheaper outfit than the BMT it’s surprising that it went to the expense of additional 3rd rail when it wasn’t needed.

Nice shots, but the first pic puzzles me - is that just a result of early 20th century photography, and that's water on the platform, or what?

That is correct. Second and Third Avenue trains provided all service on the West Farms Line from November 26, 1904 to July 10, 1905.

The BRT/BMT did not have to deal with a semi-autonomous Manhattan Elevated Railway. That 1903 lease was very costly for the IRT!

I don't know for sure. I see some porters with brooms cleaning up the platform.

It may have been costly to a certain degree, but if the MER were operating over IRT subway trackage it would have had to go along with what the IRT wanted or possibly lose its trackage rights.

The IRT should have bought the MER outright. Up until its near-bankruptcy in 1921, it was saddled with a mandatory 7% annual return on its bonds. After the Dual Contracts, they somehow convinced the IRT to build the Anderson-Jerome tunnel for el type third rail and made sure that IRT subway cars would never be able to use them, unless they cut back their subway type 3rd rail. The towers along the Jerome Line were operated by MER employees. Returning to the 1922 bond issue, the MER held up the closing and demolition of the elevated Grand Central shuttle, until the interest payments had been restructured and a majority of their securities holders had reluctantly agreed with this.

Are you sure about the tower operators? It doesn’t make any sense for towers on a predominantly subway portion of the line to be staffed by el personnel. Stretching it a bi, it could be possible that 167 St tower might have been staffed by an MER employee since it did control movements for both subway and el trains moving onto MER trackage but I can’t see the rest of the towers being staffed by any but subway division personnel.
