Re: [PHOTOS] Vintage IRT Photos

Posted by randyo on Sat May 19 15:14:50 2018, in response to [PHOTOS] Vintage IRT Photos, posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat May 19 08:12:19 2018.

Two observations. There were color postcards issued depicting the opening of the IRT to Bkln which depicted a Gibbs car painted green. AFAIK, the early gibbs cars were Tuscan red except for the very last group which were painted grey like the Lo-Vs for the 100th anniversary since the IRT felt that it was too costly to keep removing the steel dust and repainting the cars. Also in the photo of Westchester and St Ann’s Ave there is only elevated type 3rd rail instead of the dual subway and el 3rd rail which became standard IRT practice in later years in places where there was joint subway and el operation. Also it was pretty much IRT practice to name their towers for the closest street intersection to the actual tower location. In the case of the first tower in the photo it has always been called “Brook Tower” even though Brook Ave is actually a block west of the tower location and the tower probably should have been called “St Ann’s Tower."
