Does anyone here know how many R44s are left in Coney Island Yard?

Unless there are any R-44's anywhere, I believe there is only one R-44 left and it's in the transit museum.

The only R44s left should be on Staten Island.

#5240 (ex-172) at Court Street, while a four-car set #5286-5287-5289-5288 was said to be in Coney Island Yard, but according to Dave's page, they are listed as scrapped. Of course, there are the 60+ R-44's on SIR.

If they are any more R-44's there at CI Yard, they could be those from SIR being given necessary repairs on them. They have been transported back and forth from Clifton Shop at times.

They have 5xxx numbers. Next time I get stuck in traffic I'll take a better look and try to count.

OUTSTANDING pics! Thank you for sharing and the trip down Memory Lane.

If there was anything I liked about the 44's were the sounds from the brakes releasing and the door chime pre-GOH.

Staten Island R44s kept those all the way to GOH.

The last time I rode past CI Yard in 2016, there were a few 5XXX R44's there. I assumed that these were donor parts cars for SIR.

They replaced the braking system before the GOH. The original system brake release sounded like the M-1. I don't know what was wrong with it.

Didn't that have something to do with the "P" wire system ?

Only the 1200 series R46s were officially "assigned" to the JFK Exp in ABA consist. However there were plenty of times the TA take a 4 car other series R46s, signed them up as S Special and pressed them into service.

Correct. It seems that NYCT car equipment personnel couldn’t satisfactorily maintain the more complex electronic P wire braking system so those systems on both the R-44s and 46s were replaced. The Westcode system of the R-46s was a bit more reliable so the 44s were done first with the 46s waiting until GOH. When the LIRR M-1s were new, there were reports of numerous failures on them as well but eventually those problems were corrected.

Photos are up usually a month or so and removed. To, repost them, I would have to select them, Photoshop and watermark them. This would take some time.

My apologies.
