This is a great photographic story of the R44. Weren’t liked much, especially by operating crews but they were still cool in their own way. And it was great contrasting them with the older rolling stock showing them some love too. Especially when photos of the spruced up R30’s are not so common. And caught sight of the red R27s at Bush Terminal, looking so clean and already on the scrap line. Thanks Bill for these very fine pictures taking us down Memory Lane.

I don't miss the operator cab seat that was too short for comfort, but the braking was excellent, the 44s ran faster and rolled more freely than the current 46 fleet, and the 44 speedometers were more accurate. Enjoyed countless runs on the A with the 44s. Also, every female t/o I encountered when the 44s were in service all loved them, don't know the reason but never heard a female colleague complain about them.

OK. Now that you mention it, I probably saw a few of them myself, but unlike the GEV R-30s that received a mini GOH, they were only given a paint job like the WH R-30s. In retrospect, they probably should have GOHed the GE R-27s as well. Despite their lack of A/C they probably could have been used on part time rush hour only lines just to make service.

Because they were assembled in 3 car sets, they used the 1200s which had only A cars and no Bs. As for the use of R-38s, during one of the Amtrak strikes when LIRR trains couldn’t operate into Penn, full 600 ft trains of whatever was available were used on the JFK and that included some R-38s. I also recall that during that time, all the cars of the train opened up but I don’t recall if the premium fare was collected or not.

I would guess they were road worthy, but the ones pictured were freshly repainted. That meant ready for the road, but incoming R-68's put them on the scrap list.

I think GOH R-27's wouldn't be worth it because incoming new R-68's made them eligible for retirement. Maybe if no R-68's were ordered, perhaps a GOH for the R-27's.

As I recall with some discussion among with a few ERA members, MTA NYCT spent $105,000 on just repainting those 24 R-27's. They looked better than even the paint job done on the R-30's, but alas, the R-27's were taken off the road just one month later. That was it for them, and during the Kiley/Gunn era, they wanted to get the entire fleet into the non-graffiti state by mid-1989.

The R-27's paint job looked better than the R-30's at the time. 24 cars just done at a cost of $105,000, and then OOS one month later.

I agree, but the WH R-27s were no bargain either. The IRT’s R-29s also had the same heavy spring tension as the R-30s, but while the R-32s, 33s and 36s had the same controller, the spring tension was a lot less. Another reason for the retention of the GE R-30s was that starting with the R-27s, GE had an all electric transistorized control system while WH still had electro pneumatic group switches. On the R-16s through 22s, GE had a unique system of cooling the resistors from a blower that operated in sync with the motor generator whereas WH cars of those series had air cooled resistors. The blower cooled system of cooling the resistors gave a lot of trouble especially on the R-16s so towards the end of their service life, the GEs were scrapped first.

If the IRT’s R-26s which were older were road worthy enough to be GOHed as redbirds, then the R-27s certainly were road worthy enough.

I remember the debut of the JFK- if not the very day, very shortly thereafter. My Mom took me to the Transit Exhibit/Museum in the Fall of 1978- I'd just entered 5th Grade. On the way home, at the Jay St. Station while waiting for the F, we saw the JFK- I'd not heard about it- but I asked my mom, who apparently had.

This may have been Sunday, the 24th of September, it was definitely a Sunday, and the weather was still great. I got a new system map that day as well, which did not show the route, and we had KFC for dinner.

A year later the new maps came out, and the route was shown. Then, we moved to Staten Island, and I didn't get to use the subway very much. The next I remember hearing of the JFK was an article in 1987 in the NY Post or Daily News comparing the "super-clean" JFK Express to the very run-down equipment used on the Grand Street Shuttle. That summer, I went to Manhattan myself, and checked it out. Sure enough, the Orange S was running some awful R27/30, and a super-clean R44/46 was on the JFK- the cars even had special stickers near the car # to remind crews to keep them clean restrict them to the JFK- I seem to remember a series of white airplane pictograms (4 or 5 of them in a horizontal row) below the car #, which was 12XX (so I guess an R46, though I did not know that). The newspaper article had not mentioned the stickers- but it was quite obvious what purpose they served.

I liked the R44/46s with the blue stripe. Now that they're shrink-wrapping R160s, maybe they could also give us the blue stripe on R44/62/62As?

Anyway, near the end, the R44s looked bad- even my civilian eyes picked up that they were declining. I don't miss them. And besides, I can still see them on Staten Island!!! Those cars are 5 years younger than me, within a month here or there...

Whoa! I forgot about the original black fiberglass the R44s came in with. That was the best look the R44s ever had-that and the exterior door indicators for each door leaf when they lit up. But of course the TA had to screw that up too with the silver paint job.

Unlike a lot of other people on this board I kinda miss the R44s. I've ridden them practically every year they were in service from my old home line up in the Bronx-the D, to when they followed me to Queens-the A train and in between like trips to relatives in SE Queens-F train.

The whole front bonnet is fiberglass. That black paint treatment did make their front look much more sleek in appearance, just like R-46's when new. Repainting the black mask area would be an extra step and the car would spend more time in the shop.

I think I may have heard that black mask pint as raccoon face or raccoon eyes once. Can anyone say they heard the same ?

Tha part of the R-44 and 46 appearance I disliked the most was the raccoon mask” appearance of the cars which seems to have now found its way to the NTTs as well. I can’t see how that makes the car look any sleeker than in would without it and I personally think it detracts from the cars’ appearance!
