Tuscarora Almanac for December 17

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Sun Dec 17 07:38:57 2017

Tuscarora Almanac – December 17, 1950 – The Book of Last Runs

Edgewater, New Jersey
Electric Ferries

Service comes to an end on the “Edgewater Ferry” which ran between Edgewater, New Jersey and West 125th Street, Manhattan. The final run was made by the PALISADES. She was built in 1926 as one of the original “electric ferries” as the GRENVILLE KANE.
She went south to Virginia in the early fifties but returned to New York in 1959 to run on the ferries to North Brother’s and Rikers Island. She was retired in 1967.
The Edgewater Ferry had been run by the Riverside and Fort Lee Ferry Company from 1888 to 1943 when it was taken over by Electric Ferries.

In the 1943 Third Avenue Transit System map of Bronx bus and trolley routes (dated Feb. 26), the Mount Vernon-Subway route was designated (Bx-)47. It does seem that that was part of the batch of routes listed that had not been converted to buses under STS operation in the 1947-48 period. There are some other routes which were listed by numbers on that map I have other questions of, and whether their bus conversion was under WST aegis and if so, when and by which letter (and as of 1973, Liberty Lines number):
- Broadway-Yonkers (designated [Bx-]43)
- Jerome Avenue (Bx-44)
- Fifth Avenue (Mount Vernon) ([Bx-]46)
The Jerome Avenue route is one I don't remember seeing amongst the 1947-48 bus conversions. Nor their 145th Street crosstown route in Manhattan - wouldn't that have been designated 107 if they issued a Manhattan trolley route map in 1943? (Given how the Bronx map had numbers for the streetcar routes despite the streetcars using letters or no designation?)

Third Avenue Transit also loomed large on another December 17 in NYC transit history - in 1956, when it (along with its Surface Transportation Corporation of New York and Westchester Street Transportation Company, Inc., operating subsidiaries) was acquired by Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc. FACL thereafter put Surface's six Manhattan and 42 Bronx bus routes under the aegis of a newly-created operating subsidiary they controlled, Surface Transit, Inc., and continued to run WST until the sale of its routes to Liberty Lines in 1969.

It's pretty amazing that the Edgewater Ferry lasted almost 20 years after the GWB opened...

The Third Avenue Railways conversion of the New Rochelle and Mount Vernon to Subway routes in 1950 were Westchester, not Bronx routes. They were legally not Westchester Street Transportation routes, but Westchester Railways routes. Their designation were Routes A and B respectively. They had new Twin Coach buses exclusively for these 2 routes. In 1973 Westchester County DOT changed the A and B designation to Routes W42 and W43 respectively.

Makes you wonder how many of its patrons were going to Palisades Amusement Park...

Didn’t some of those “electric ferries” go to the Bkln - SI ferry service?

Then it begs the question of why the Mount Vernon - Subway route, if not a Bronx route, was on a Bronx bus and trolley map and made to look like it was a Bronx route. Evidently the 47 designation was never used after it was converted . . . it also begs the question of the Broadway-Yonkers and Fifth Avenue (Mount Vernon) lines' status at the point of their conversions, whether it was within WST or Westchester Railways' jurisdiction.

All bus routes operating in Westchester County were all Westchester Division routes, not Bronx Division routes. Route numbers 42 and 43 were adopted in 1973 after Westchester DOT oversaw the routes, under the Bee Line system.

Randy: It was the other way around. The Electric Ferries Company took over operation of the Brooklyn (69th St) - Staten Island Ferry in 1939. They ordered seven new boats which were built between 1940 and 1947. As these boats arrived the older vessels were displaced to other services.

You might remember some of their names; E.G.DIEFENBACH, HAMILTON, GOTHAM, HUDSON, ST.GEORGE, THE NARROWS and THE TIDES.
