" If it's too complex for you to understand, just say so."

This is the demeaning attitude I will no longer respond to.

You have no understanding of capital. Capital gain is not a subsidy. The RR took the risk with the land that was now theirs. They keep the gain, no different than a homeowner buying a distressed property and improving it. The capital gain does not go back to the seller, who is out of the picture.

Again, I am done with you. You are a demeaning asshole.

Actually, it is a public authority created by interstate compact, specifically authorized by Congress, it has rights and privileges in 2 states. it is not taxed, and it can issue tax free bonds. It has no authority to levy taxes, but sure rakes in the bucks from tolls, user fees, and rents.

You have no understanding of capital. Capital gain is not a subsidy.

Yes, but you have a fairly vague understanding of what capital gains actually are.

I already tried to explain the concept to you, but you seem to be having trouble with it. Try again:

Suppose a stock has a value of $10 today. I purchase one share $10. Next week, the value is $20, so I sell it for $20.

Question 1: What is my net profit?

Question 2: Did I get something for nothing (ie, a subsidy)?

Now suppose a stock has a value of $10 today. The government takes one share from Steve and gives it to me for free. Next week, the value is $20, so I sell it for $20.

Question 1: What is my net profit?

Question 2: Did I get something for nothing (ie, a subsidy)?

Now suppose a piece of real estate owned by Steve has a value of $1 million today. The government takes it from Steve (without compensation) and gives it to me for free. I spend $100,000 making improvements to it, which increases its value to $1.2 million. I then sell it for $1.2 million.

Question 1: What is my net profit?

Question 2: Did I get something for nothing (ie, a subsidy)?

The RR took the risk with the land that was now theirs.

Yes, but the land was "theirs" because they got it for free. That's called a "subsidy."

I refer you to the third lesson above:

Now suppose a piece of real estate owned by Steve has a value of $1 million today. The government takes it from Steve (without compensation) and gives it to me for free. I spend $100,000 making improvements to it, which increases its value to $1.2 million. I then sell it for $1.2 million.

When I spend $100,000 to improve the property, I have no guarantee it will actually improve the value by twice that amount. I'm taking a risk— my improvements could leave the property's value unchanged (in which case I'd be out the $100,000) or it could even damage the property and reduce its value. Or the real estate market could take a dive while the improvements are being carried out, leaving my property with a value of only $600,000.

But the risks I take investing the $100,000 into the property don't change the fact that I got the property itself for free.

They keep the gain, no different than a homeowner buying a distressed property and improving it.

Except the point, which you consistently fail to grasp, is that the railroads didn't buy the property in the first place. They got it for free. See my example above; if the previous owner gives me a distressed property for free and I improve it, I can legitimately claim the value of the improvements as a capital gain, but it doesn't change the fact that the property itself was a gift. That I improved the property to make it more valuable doesn't erase the fact that I got it for free.

Again, I am done with you. You are a demeaning asshole.

And this is why SubChat's masculinity culture is so toxic. That you are proven wrong is considered inherently demeaning, but no matter how often you proclaim your desire to leave, you never actually do.

You can't.

Because if you leave, you submit yourself to the "shame" of having been proven wrong. Your only hope is to continue spewing gibberish in the hope that I get bored and leave, so that you can pretend my departure is a concession and convince yourself that you were totally right all along.

Bad news: I have a cold. I'm laid up in bed with nothing else to do but distract myself with completely mindless entertainment. I could do this all day (and probably tomorrow too).

LION has looked at the issue.

Results of LION'sS deep and penetrating examination (15 minutes on google)

USE THE OLD STATION

Most trains are AMTK albeit only 1 west of BFFLW which would require reverse moves to continue to/from west.

With Old station, a shuttle train could run between Airport, Station and Downtown.
Shuttle train will develop neighborhoods CAnal Station will knot.

Old building knead knot, at least knot with station budget. Let someonte else develop that.

Taking that old building out of the picture, the cost will be rather modest to build a new AMTK station, AND that station has much more room for rail development. IE... NYS funded trains BUF-> ALBY et NYC Has space to receive and hold increased traffic.

Uest to handle 200 trains per day If we get 20 in there we will be lucky, but it would be a cornerstone for reginal transport.

Trains from elsewither can konekt to AMTK which they have no service for now.

Central Terminal would have replaced both stations - so "cheaper" is relative. Yes it is cheaper but they would still need to staff two stations. Larkinville would have been a better option as it was close enough to downtown and could handle all trains. I guess it was more costly than even Central Terminal to pull off.

The point there is that the gas taxes in Europe cover the cost of road maintenance, whereas they do not here.

Canada also has a higher gas tax which pays for the roads, but not fully. It's part of the three reasons Canadians prefer to travel between Canadian cities via the US (1. Cheaper gas. 2. Better roads. 3. Roads aren't desolate and no areas with 50+ miles between gas stations). Thus, our road subsidies are helping Canadian commerce :).

The roads are abysmal in Europe, so that money (as high as 60-70 percent of the price at the pump in some countries, which is immoral) is going into someone's pockets. Never mind their charging tolls on top of those taxes, on the motorways.

Only in the butterfly-effect sense that making massive-scale changes hundreds of years ago would change the course of history to the point where no one currently alive would ever have been born. We are, after all, the product of so many contingencies.

Hell, if you'd convinced every single person who had sex in the 1680s to do so in a slightly different manner (say, starting 3 seconds later), then we wouldn't be around.

only way around it is...we kill ourseves or, if we have a house, go out west, find us some injun family somewhere and give it to them.

Why them? It wasn't their personal land that was taken.

Better option: We pay reparations for the atrocities that still-living people have suffered, we commit to not being dicks in the future by, say, poisoning their water for the benefit of a few billionaire oil barons, and we have the schools teach real American history, not the sanitised version that skips all the genocide.

And maybe arrest the people responsible for the "boarding schools." That was a form of genocide that didn't end until the late 90s, so some of the people who committed it are still alive.

or we can just...live with it.

It's easy to live with it when you're not the one being killed by it.

Not really. A subsidy is when the government gives money or other value to an industry for the purpose of keeping it in business despite unprofitability or to keep its prices low artificially. That's a pretty succinct definition.

Your confusion about those facts is reflected in the first two items on the LoQOCA.

And hey look, it grew another question since you last spewed gibberish! Why not take a stab at it?

1. Define "liberal."
     a. Define "Marxist."
     b. Define "collectivist."
     c. Define "national-socialist."
     d. Define "antisemitic."

2. Define "conservative."

3. Define "weather."

4. Define "climate."

5. When did the trait of skin with limited pigmentation first appear in the Americas and why did it appear at that time?

6. Describe exactly what form of government you would endorse. In more detail than "small." As in, name a few government programs and/or activities that you support.

7. What do customer service associates have to do with Godwin?

8. Do you support gay marriage?

9. On what basis do you claim I'm a Nazi?

10. Name three people you believe are not liberal.

11. Where did I express antisemitism or Naziism?

12. How does an income tax attack free enterprise?

13. Where have I, quote, "proven myself a psycho" in any past post?

14. How is it antisemitic that I personally chose not to observe Passover?

15. What does antisemitism have to do with the equipment America's military issues its soldiers?

16. Do you support or oppose the persecution of Edward Snowden? Do you think he's a traitor or a hero?

17. Do you favour open borders?

18. On what basis do you believe the Society of Professional Journalists is liberal?

19. On what basis do you believe that Barack Obama is liberal?

20. How would health care be cheaper if the government stopped paying for it?

21. What's wrong with the ad Wendy Davis ran?

22. What did Stalin do that was in any way liberal? Note that you may only name things he did, not lies he told in his propaganda.

23. Name one of my "godless liberal political idols."

24. Do you favour a feudal system where most political power is wielded by a hereditary monarch but some influence is held by a small class of hereditary aristocrats?

25. Do you support the creation of an official state religion?

26. Exactly how is this article antisemitic?

27. Define "antisemitism."

28. So who do you think built the roads and the public schools? Who do you think makes sure the air and water are relatively unpolluted? Who do you think keeps the trains running?

29. Where have I called the CDC "pseudoscience?"

30. So what is your proposed plan for removing non-Jews from Judea, Samaria, and Gaza without causing the deaths of many of them?

31. What's so threatening about saying: "If you don't vote, people will know that you didn't vote?"

32. How is it "anti-First Amendment" to criticise the Salvation Army?

33. Where have left-wing policies have caused misery, totalitarianism, and genocide?

34. Do you post on Free Republic under the same handle as on SubChat?

35. How does offering to help someone make a living will constitute a "death panel?"

36. How are Iraqi children "murderers?"

37. In what way is this statement bigoted?

38. Do you believe abortion should be legal or illegal?

39. How, exactly does this post make any "terroristic threats?"

40. Exactly how is this post racist?

41. In what way am I a "hatemonger?"

42. In what way is this post racist?

43. Why do you keep changing subject lines?

44. When have I ever changed thread titles in a manner similar to your "robbed by a cop" nonsense?

45. How is it immoral to charge high gas taxes?
