Like Syracuse, most suburbs are nice, downtown is not, and no one goes downtown. I have relatives in Syracuse for 50+ years. I know that. My cousin never went downtown until he was 16 to get his learner's permit.

I coached at the Empire State Games for many years, and the host site for hockey the years when we were in Syracuse was the "Onondaga County War Memorial" or "On Center" as they called it later. Not a lot of life down there in the summer. Maybe a little better when school is in session. Still go to a meeting for hockey every year, but we use an East Syracuse hotel, never downtown.

Incorrect, it has been undergoing a steady renovation. Even the end of the 2010 article you just linked to says so:
Thanks to these dedicated volunteers, Buffalo Central has been secured and debris shown in these photographs has been removed. The Terminal is no longer abandoned and continues to make good progress on the long and winding road to restoration.

The main hall has been renovated to the point where it is usable as an event space. The rest of the interior (offices) is in terrible shape, but that won't get in the way of it being used as a rail station again.

In a perfect world, Buffalo would get a station like Worcester Union Station - historical, multi-modal, with plenty of safe indoor parking. Run the light rail out there on its way to the airport and it's just as good as being downtown.

There are no trains, and mo tracks at that station now, so it would be unlikely that any ADA waiver would be granted if they were put back in. There are no SL trains presently serving the area, and all of the trains go into NYP, so unless some new route materialized, that is absolutely true. Much of Amtrak in NY is already high platform.

I like the S/L cars, but the single level fleet handles Empire Service pretty well, level boarding is easier for crowded trains, and changing trains to get into NYP would be ridiculous. NYS pays a good buck for service, what would they gain by making service clumsier? The only thing S/L service would add in NY is a real lounge on the Lake Shore, but it would be handicapped by the inability to get into NYP.

I agree, but the Superliners would be great for a restored "New England States" (BOS-CHI).

Once every few years a Superliner LSL makes its way to ALB, and people are transferred to/from an Empire Corridor set to reach NYC.

So, it'd be awesome if the LSL kept the single levels while a newly restored NES had Superliners :).

There's plenty of track space, they can have a 6 car high level platform with a ramp and room for a 5 car low platform (which ALB had until last year). Why 6 cars? Because only the LSL is longer than that, and other than the LSL nothing runs with more than 4 cars + cafe open past ALB.

SDY and ROC are low platform. SDY got the waiver to not get high platforms as the station is on a curve, so it will never have an issue.

SYR has a mini-low which is used when trains can't use the platform track - the Superliners stop there when needed.

Pittsfield was renovated but only has a low platform (due to freight).
Springfield also low, might be getting high as part of the CDOT commuter rail project, but plenty of room for low platform there.

Worcester has a high platform only, but the old low platform is still present past the end and forms part of a walkway to a parking lot. Just need to tear down the fence.

Framingham and Back bay are low platform.

BOS is the only problem station, but I don't think it's insurmountable. They're planning on expanding the station and with that they could put in one low platform.

Rochester is becoming high platform. Like I said, I like the Superliners, but I don't see any reason to think we gain much by provisioning for them. The Superliners are impressive cars. I'd really hate to lose the ability to run them through upstate NY, and it's really not that hard to keep the stations compatible.

As for Rochester, unless it's an island platform they'll likely have the same setup as Syracuse - a mini-low. If an Amtrak is on the far track for whatever reason, people need to get to the train somehow, and that same provision keeps it Superliner-friendly.

As I stated in my other posts, I also like the S/L series. I'm not sure I would call them impressive, but that's subjective. I guess I just see rail across NY, and how it can be grown and improved in a financially sustainable manner in a different light, and don't see a S/L car equipped train as having any particular value when put on a list of things that would be really useful. I'd rather see money spent on restored Southern Tier service before trying to bring in cars that can't go to the present logical endpoints without spending hard to come by cash, just because we like them a little better.

That'd be a false dilemma if the private sector were permitted to handle this situation; the cash would not be so hard to come by. That said, I would like to be able to see places like Jamestown NY by rail again, even just for a brief visit.

Agreed, but there needs to be something in downtown, regardless of our opinions of Depew. That's the whole selling point of the train, is it takes you right to downtown. Depew is great if you're going to the airport or the suburbs, but it's worse than Central Terminal for downtown access. Again, the trend is moving back towards the city. Planning without acknowledging that is idiotic

Syracuse is a real shit hole, but again, the overall trend is moving back towards the downtown. The problem in Syracuse is that Wegmans is the largest employer. SU is probably the 2nd. You're so desperate to keep a piece of history alive that you can't even see the ridiculousness of what you're suggesting. So instead of spending the money to build a decent station walking distance to downtown, you want to not only spend money restoring and maintaining a gargantuan station that will never be used to capacity in an area that will never see the density that downtown sees, but you also want to spend money on building a light rail line so that you can now sell that station as convenient to downtown. Do you not see how incredibly ass backwards that is?

It is truly a magnificent structure, but they speculated far too much when building this. Even if you converted all the space in Central Terminal to different uses (apartments in the tower, etc), how long would it take for the surrounding area to develop? How long would it take for the density of downtown Buffalo to spread to Central Terminal? Until then, this station is inconvenient to the type of area that young people are moving to.

Last few times I've been in a superliner, it was level boarding.

Everyone crams down the stairs and waits for an exceedingly long time before it hits the station, and whamo.

And what's nice, they don't have to line up and crowd where most of the passengers hang out. Added benefit, they aren't blocking the way for people going to and fro, and stopping me from going to the dining car. They are completely out of the way!

Lastly, are we talking about superliner rapid transit or something? How crowded and time consuming are we even talking about? I thought the upstate was supposed to have pleasant scenery, so why not use superliners?

Walking 1.9 miles from the train station to a public bus is not a standard mode of travel for normal people.

As for Pepe Depew, it is a stupid place for a train station and essentially conveys the fact that Buffalo is a hole that no one wants to travel to.

I favor the Larkinville option. Close to downtown and in a neighborhood that could use the investment and has a reasonable future. Central Station was always a huge mistake.

Even if they do choose Central Station, the absence of a public bus is meaningless. There's no public bus because there's no train station there. Obviously one would be implemented as part of any train service.

Finally, Buffalo doesn't need a light rail to the airport. Building one takes away from more useful investment in the light rail like extension to Amherst or the Tonawandas.

Because NYS subsidizes the trains (most of them) and they want trains that go to NYP.

No. There's a credible plan to redevelop the building as a combination mall, community center and train station. It's a lot closer to downtown than Depew. The Exchange St. station can be kept, if people want a true downtown stop, for trains terminating in Buffalo or going to Canada. But Depew would be shut, and Central would be a regional station for both the city and suburbs.

You think malls being 5 miles apart is a short distance?

There was speculation that the city would grow out to that point, with a much bigger population that it ever gained. The station was always too big, except for the few years after it was opened, and the WWII years.

It seems ridiculous to me to have the train make a stop just outside of town and then another one in downtown. Depew makes some sense because of proximity to the airport (and even then, I doubt anyone is really making the connection). And if it had to be one or the other, I know I'd be pissed if I was taking a train and had to get off somewhere that would still require a transfer to get into downtown, and nobody is taking a train from outside of Buffalo to go to a mall.

For a city like Buffalo, absolutely. On Long Island I get it, but then again, I watched the Source Mall go into a death spiral after Fortunoff left. Nobody even considered that anymore, they just went to Roosevelt Field.

Exactly my point. If the city were to really grow out to there, then I'd be more inclined to support using it, but even with converting it into its own mini-city, it's still horribly disconnected and inconvenient to where the city currently is. It would take a Brooklyn-like rebound for Buffalo to grow out to Central Terminal. It sucks, it's a beautiful building and I'd love to see it used for Amtrak. Unfortunately I just don't see it ever being an area that makes sense. At best, I could see them repurposing the building for mixed use and the station itself being a stop for a light rail or commuter rail running up that abandoned ROW to Towanda, or something to the airport. But Amtrak needs to provide access to the urban core. I don't ever see that being Central Terminal.
