This article doesn't make sense in billions of parallel universes. But even without reading it, if there's no racial profiling, that means they racial profile and go straight to me. |

If you pay your fare, you have nothing to worry about. I have never cheated a transit system, and I've been in Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, DC, Baltimore , MD,Pittsburgh, Pa. & San Francisco, CA.I do think that Pittsburgh is going a little too far with their investigation of an individual in the manner described. |

I do not see how this is really any different from the fare checks that are done on the SBS buses in NYC in most of the boroughs.Except for Staten Island where SBS fares are paid on the bus, in all of the other cases - folks simply have to show their fare tickets. Those without tickets get talked to, or have to deal with the fare checker officers. Again (except for Staten Island) there are fare ticket machines at each of the bus stops for folks to pay their fare. I don't see why any person should have a problem - if they simply pay their fare, and show their ticket when asked. Mike |

Some of it relates to the current attention to immigration issues. As an example, NYC does not fingerprint fare beaters as a regular policy (there can be special circumstances) so ICE is not notified. Some people are concerned that fare inspection as implemented in some cities could result in a change in what a particular agency is presently doing. That is the behind the scenes message. I'm sure there are legions of folks on different sides of the underlying question, but that is (my opinion only) not a subject for this for section of the board. |

That's the point of the article, all right. But since I don't like POP on top of their sanctimony, and because I miss the PCCs on that system (subways still have the low platforms they stopped at), I'll be avoiding it if I ever visit PGH in the future. |

Most of the "honor system" systems out there randomly select whole cars or stations to check tickets. Profiling would be impossible (Unless they pick stations in ethnic neighborhoods more often - easily solved by checking all stations equally and having the on board crews check successive vehicles between stops until reaching the terminal, then repeat until the other terminal, etc). |

A moving team is still cheaper than having a conductor on every train. That is how Phoenix does it (not sure about Denver). The guards/inspectors on both systems are ever-present too, it's impossible to complete a trip without seeing one. Compare to HBLR where I've heard rumors of ticket checkers but not seen one in years. |

If you were criminally charged, of course that would be true. But the city made it a point not to do that. I'm sure there is a way a person could make himself a collar, but that is not what happens in the greatest majority of cases. They don't want to pay PD overtime, they don't want to pay the cost of processing, and they don't want the guilty to have a criminal record. I don't know what surrounding jurisdictions are doing, but that is the policy in NYC. |

That's the idea in theory behind catching repeat offenders, it doesn't work as well as it should. It is political/social not practical law enforcement based. The old way used to turn up lots of out of state stuff, old failure to appears and the like. They do it this way to deliberately avoid that. I am not advocating for or against, I'm just telling it like it is being done. |
