Going back to your original post - even if you have no idea what the sign means, which I find very unlikely, you'd see the crossing and train tracks and unless you're a moron, you know what trains are and you know that they go on train tracks, and you'd know to look for a train. And if it was one of a number of other people who had responded, I would have felt comfortable making that assumption. But unfortunately, the combination of 1) this specific poster, 2) the ambiguous wording that, out of context, would appear to mean he was talking about all crossings, and 3) the fact that no matter the crossing type, his [easy to verify] statement was factually wrong, doesn't allow me to make that assumption. Thus, I replied as I did. If there is an ungated crossing where the prudent speed for crossing is 5 mph, it is not imprudent, nor is it likely to cause an accident, to come to a complete stop.Obviously. But what about unprotected crossings where the crossing speed is GREATER than 5 MPH? And what about crossings where a traffic-control signal or sign directs traffic to proceed? And what about consequences other than the one you are focusing on (accidents)?? |
