The contrast that came into my head.Rail Crossing with Heavy Trains = Signage with no lighting Neighborhood Automobile Intersection without Heavy Trains = Signage, plus 24/7 lighting in operation That's all there is to it. Nothing to argue. Just musings. |

Rail Crossing with Heavy Trains = Signage with no lightingNeighborhood Automobile Intersection without Heavy Trains = Signage, plus 24/7 lighting in operation The first might have hundreds or even thousands of cars per day. The second, if private, might have 10 cars per day and 20 trains per day - much less chance of a collision even if everyone drove through with their eyes closed. The statistically expected number of accidents, and even of fatalities, is far higher in the first case. A side hit at 30 mph can be just as fatal as being hit by a train. |

All agreed, though I think you mean to flip first and second. And perhaps someone who encounters flashing reds all the time could be subconsciously conditioned to assume that an intersection / rail crossing without a single light is safer than it looks. |

Yeah, no lights, no stop sign implies (to me) don't stop in the road like a jerkoff. If I lived or commonly drove in an area where that doesn't apply, I'd have a different notion. Can an active RR on the East Coast have nothing more than an old, weathered RxR sign, no lights, no stop sign? I've never seen one. |

You shouldn't stop in the road like a jerkoff even if the crossing does have lights (unless the lights are active). There would not need to be a stop sign at a crossing with lights unless there was some other external reason.Yes, an active RR can have just a sign without a stop sign or active protection. |

Most two-way stop-controlled intersections have no flashing red lights. And an unprotected rail crossing is sort of like that in some ways but it's not a perfect analogy. Another analogy would be that the rail crossing is something you yield for - think of the RR Xing sign as a yield sign. |

Almost made one good point - that it's not heavy weight that matters but rather heavy traffic flow volume.Another point is that the flashing lights at your automobile intersection are much simpler - they flash 24/7. At a rail crossing they need to be activated and deactivated by a sensor and that requires maintenance. So it's a more complicated operation. |

Can an active RR on the East Coast have nothing more than an old, weathered RxR sign, no lights, no stop sign? Before they put up automated gates at the crossings in East Stroudsburg, trains used to stop at crossings with crossbucks and a flagman got out and stopped traffic. |

How about thisThat's the Housatonic Railroad along Massachusetts Route 41 in Great Barrington. If you move north up the highway you will see more houses with private crossings in their driveways. The private crossing sign is the only sign. The Housatonic is active (though perhaps slow moving) and Massachusetts is on the east coast. |

If the visibility is excellent, look both ways and breeze through. If the visibility is poor, come nearly or completely to a stop to be sure you are safe. There are after all yield signs that require a virtual stop because the visibility is so bad. |

Ain't that somethin'.Outside the city, life requires a tad more common sense. Then again, no subway slashers, etc (and more etc, now that they've made various types of crazy non-arrest-able infractions). In that spot, anyone who lived there would have a clue about it, and visitors would likely be told 'there can be a train crossing the driveway' |

"RR Xing sign as a yield sign"This is a good analogy. Many people simply blow off the idea of 'yield', since they've never gotten a ticket for it. That reminds me of the 'roid head I saw yesterday, stuck in traffic in a late-model Maserati. He was honking and cursing at the driver ahead of him, who was in turn waiting for the go-sign from the cop directing traffic through the intersection. Eventually the cop got tired of listing to the idiot, walked over and barked at the cretin. The jackoff shut up and got agreeable real fast. He must have figured 'uhhh, if he searches my car right now, I'm toast'. |

As a cheap safety innovation, reminders at state borders might be good. "Check for train at all crossings" or something like that. Or "No warnings of oncoming trains. LOOK AND LISTEN."Yeah they're supposed to know, but they don't. |

Here's a RR crossing on high speed (55mph) US Rte. 322 in Lewistown, Pa.No crossing gates , probably because someone might crash through them when down , if they misjudged the red lights which flash for a good time before the slow train arrives. You can see cars blowing through in the video below. RR Crossing on Rte. 322 |
