A 75' car with 5 doors and bench seating coupled with convention NYCT design and features will exceed axle load limits when fully loaded. The reason the 75' cars here have the transverse seating is specifically to eat up floor space and limit the number of standees. You can of course reduce car weight to allow for a full passenger load but that means higher car prices and more risks in that new/unconventional designs and materials would have to be used. |

The extra doorway counts as additional standing space, in practice (no seats always has more standing room than even bench seats). So I would swap the bottom two... |

Transverse seats eat up floor space; the more such seats, the less room for standees. |

Wow, surprised 75/5/transverse has less room than the R46.Of course it isn't just about cramming people into trains, they could just remove all seats if that were the case. It's a balance of comfort and capacity. Increased seated capacity benefits people the other 20 hours of the day, and all day on weekends. Pretty much, the only time removing seats is a benefit is if the train is truly crush loaded. I'd say a combination would be better - have the "A" cars with longitudinal seating and the "B" cars with transverse. |

One of the lines that circles the city has trains (10 cars long) with one or two cars with six (yes, 6!) doors on each side. And the Yamanote is actually 11 cars long (though they recently got replaced the 6 door cars with regular 4 door ones due to the introduction of platform doors on the line). But that's the difference. Even their Shinkansen has 3x2 and 3x3 seating (at least the bilevel ones JR East uses for their lines). In Tokyo I can get a $50/night hotel room with an underground passage directly to a major station, except the room so tiny it is impossible for two people to be standing inside it at once. Their commuter train fares are less than $2 for comparable distances to "City ticket", but in return you will never even see a seat unless you are travelling reverse peak.Tokyo is cheaper but people require a much smaller circle of personal space. This is 'murica damn it! We like our 2x2 and 3x2 commuter rail, 2x2 in coach on Amtrak, and transverse seating on subway cars! |
