"There's no reason they can't have 5 doorways per car on 75' cars."There is a very good reason for 4 door openings per side: weight. A 75' car with 5 doors and bench seating coupled with convention NYCT design and features will exceed axle load limits when fully loaded. The reason the 75' cars here have the transverse seating is specifically to eat up floor space and limit the number of standees. You can of course reduce car weight to allow for a full passenger load but that means higher car prices and more risks in that new/unconventional designs and materials would have to be used. |
