And the Yamanote is actually 11 cars long (though they recently got replaced the 6 door cars with regular 4 door ones due to the introduction of platform doors on the line). But that's the difference. Even their Shinkansen has 3x2 and 3x3 seating (at least the bilevel ones JR East uses for their lines). In Tokyo I can get a $50/night hotel room with an underground passage directly to a major station, except the room so tiny it is impossible for two people to be standing inside it at once. Their commuter train fares are less than $2 for comparable distances to "City ticket", but in return you will never even see a seat unless you are travelling reverse peak.Tokyo is cheaper but people require a much smaller circle of personal space. This is 'murica damn it! We like our 2x2 and 3x2 commuter rail, 2x2 in coach on Amtrak, and transverse seating on subway cars! |
