There's nothing ridiculous about those light globes; they perfectly fit the historic character of the station.New light sources in the old globes, or the old, somewhat weak ones supplemented by newer lamps of the same spectrum but higher efficiency would be a nice touch, and *cheap* considering the $$$$ shoveled into the subway (building the absurd, likely to flood new South Ferry twice, for example). |

Then he floats off into oblivion covered with bubbles , I imagine. It was a radio thing, so you had to imagine things. |

Does anyone know the status of 181st St? That is the station where the ceiling partially collapsed onto the tracks and the platforms and afterwards it was discovered that 168th St urgently needed repairs as well. |

I'v always liked that station in spite of its funky appearance and damage. The incredibly high ceilinged spacious space, square thick columns, platforms one side lower than the other, mosaics of course, just makes this station plain awesome (unfortunately a very oversed word. I meant it though. Sorry that this word has kind of lost its original connotation due to being overused). Now if only they could restore those original vintage BMT pillar signs. A very large upper case "Roman style" letter "C" with the rest of the station name, "hambers" nested inside it. Dream on.... it's too bad. |

I agree. Without the globes it's just going to look like a copy of 181st, which IMO had a lot of historical feel renovated out of it.The dim lighting was part of the character of the station. Ah well... "progress"... |

Well, I'm glad the station got rehabbed. But in terms of style- those globe lights were great. I'd have liked them to be retained, cleaned up, and perhaps supplemented by some recessed lighting ..The fluorescent fixtures they've installed look ugly, to me. |

The current configuration of the platform heights is different from the way the station was originally built. As originally built, the 2 westernmost tracks ascended to the grade of the westernmost track with the intention of both tracks going onto the Bkln Br. The 2 easternmost tracks were at the same grade of the N/B middle track. The idea being that trains from the Willy B would continue back to Bkln over the Bkln Br and trains coming from the Manny B would descend under the Bkln Br tks to Nassau St and return to Bkln via the Montague St tube. By the time the Nassau St subway was actually built, it was apparent that the Bkln Br was not going to be connected to the Centre St subway so the grades of the tracks were rebuilt to their current configuration with the outside tks connecting to Nassau St and the inside tks being used for short turns with the relay tk S/O the station. |

Excellent!I don't mind the mercury vapor lights going the way of the dodo; they were contemporary in and of themselves (part of a light renovation done to the station in 1991) and made the station look dreary as hell. It's an architectural gem but looked like crap even compared to 181st St. (which had a nice, early 2000's renovation). Can't wait to see the reno job on 181st...it's been almost seven years since the ceiling collapse and that scaffolding is STILL up, geez. |

Thank you for this info.Part of the Brooklyn Bridge ramp still exists right? Can be viewed from the south end of the outside platform (IIRC). So the original grade of the westernmost tracks must have been somewhat steeper to meet/ form the approach to this ramp? Have you seen or know of any original as built photos which show the unrebuilt structure? PSC reps. maybe? |
