Ah, the days when the rapid transit debt funded stations that were never used, and now we spend billions to try to get a few lousy stations and two tracks on the Second Avenue subway completed. |

And those few 2nd Ave stations will remain closed because of leaks, or some other problems, like the new Hudson yards on the #7. All I want are the kickbacks the MTA gets from these shoddy crooked contractors! |

There is (or was) a gated door on the N/E of the northbound platform that also leads to the shell station via a steep ramp which would have been stairs if they were completed. I thought both entrances from Broadway G line station to S 4th street platforms were sealed up recently though. |

South 4th st. shell is located just north of platforms of the Broadway station and one level above it.As I understand from people who've accessed it (legally), beyond the gate or false wall at the north end of both platforms are passageways that continue north - they would have been transfer passageways, from B'way to S.4th St. station. They contain provisions for stairways (steep ramps) to each of the platforms. |

There is a door to the north continuation of this mezzanine, which is used as a maintenance area and presumably connects to the South 4th St. platforms.Bob |

Although most railfans do refer to it as “South 4th St” it’s highly possible that the station might have ultimately been called “Union Ave” if built since that is the thoroughfare it crosses. I have seen PSC reports on the building of the IRT and BMT that indicate names for stations that were planned but had different names when actually built. |

Before that were removed during station rehab, Utica Av on the A also had steep ramps from the lower level platform to the upper level. They were sealed up inside what looked like heavy columns near the center of the platforms. |

As I mentioned in several posts on this topic, If the line were to have been built, the houses along the proposed route would have had be demolished since S 4 St does not run east of Union Ave and would have needed to be through routed like 6 Av in Manhattan between W 3 St and Canal St and Pitkin Av east of Ruby St Bkln. |

It is very dusty with miscellaneous debris (IIRC) and sometimes, standing water. Photos of provisions for the stairways show the steep ramps. I'm assuming that each of the five platforms have provisions for stairways. Photos were taken on a legal group visit in the early 90s. Rope was somehow fastened up the side of the ramp, to wherever it could be attached in the station shell or on the provision itself. People then accessed the platform by pulling themselves up along the rope. |

It could actually have several names depending on how much of it would actually have been built. Since it was to connect to the proposed Utica Av subway, it could be called by So 4 St Line, or Utica/Stuyvesant since it would be running under those streets also. The entire A Line in Bkln is called the “Fulton St Line" even though a large portion of it runs under Pitkin and Liberty Aves. The F line between Jay St and Church Ave is officially the “Smith St Line" even though only a small portion of the line is actually under Smith St. |

Posted by Express Rider on Thu Apr 28 21:41:53 2016, in response to Re: South 4th St, posted by Renee gil on Thu Apr 28 14:37:30 2016. The tour of S4 I was told about/saw photos of, did include visiting this closed section of the full length mezzanine above the G's Broadway station.Photos did include views of wide double stairways (maybe triple wide?), as you might expect for such a large transfer point, from the street, down to some point along the walls of this now closed mezzanine area. I do not know if, or how, this mezzanine was or would have been designed to connect to any mezzanine above the S4th St. platforms Any details on the full length mezzanine/wide stairways provided by someone who has bben there would be welcomed. Thanks. - This was a private, non museum, tour maybe aroun '90 -'91 (?) arranged with the MTA for a small group of people. It may also have included a visit to the Utica St. subway shell (seen shapshots of this) and mid mezzanine there as well. |

I think I was told by someone (at the museums's transit history conference mid-1992) who was on the S4 tour that this section of the mezzanine was closed during the mid-1970's.- I know, that's not an exact informative answer at all being from memory. Maybe someone on this board knows an exact month/year for this closure. I used the 2nd Ave.-Houston station during spring 1971 and remember its full length mezz. still being open then. |

A new street(Stuyvesant Avenue) would have cut over from Bushwick ave, across Myrtle and Broadway. Today, the massive housing co-op development stands in the path of the line east of Union. There Is one sign of the stations existance that can be seen on the surface.Ive seen it plenty of times. |
