That TMMY has a trolley from X and a subway car from Y isn't what drives admissions. Its the ride and the location. What will boost revenue the quickest is adding passenger capacity, which is why it's the first thing listed in the short-term strategic project list. |

Yes, they do, but strictly speaking, NYTM is not an operating museum, that is, a museum that operates regularly scheduled trips with its vintage equipment as part of the interpretive experience.NYTM does put on excursions, special commemorative operating events (think last summer's BMT 100 parade), and the Holiday Train, but you can't ride its equipment on any given visit, as you can at BERA, etc. |

So it does get enough admissions that they can fill their operating cars?I really hope you're right about the ride and location. As another poster pointed out, there is competition from other museums in the area. For instance, NYTM draws people from around NYC because of its accessibility and resources. The Amtrak excursion is used as an example of the potential customer base, but that's a one-in-a-long-time, scenic trip, which isn't quite the same thing. |

The Amtrak foliage excursion was for the well-to-do railfan seeking rare mileage, and required an overnight stay in Albany. The trouble with most railroad museums of all sorts is that they reside in God's country. Some are successful, others are not. |

It was brought up on one of the many threads about TMNY that the museum had the opportunity to acquire some space in Bush Terminal but turned it down due to its proximity to the NYTM. Assuming it was true, I have a few questions. Where exactly on Bush Terminal property would it have been? That is would it have been in an area where there would have been sufficient space to operate the cars? If there were to be sufficient operating room, then it doesn’t seem that it would have been real competition for the NYTM since the NYTM is not a true operating museum but is predominantly a static display so why was the location declined if in fact that was the case? |

Also the museum out in Riverhead with the LIRR M1 pair. So make that FIVE museums in the Tri State area. Only two of them are easy to get to by public transit... I would say Riverhead is easy to get to but we all know lousy LIRR service is East of Ronkonkma. |

Still, the NYTM 9700-series M-1 pair in Morris Park has no home going on 9 years. OBRM keeps some equipment nearby in Richmond Hill.URHS has no home yet open to the public either, and their wished-for museum will also be in God's Country, in northwestern NJ. Port Jeff has 2 long abandoned sidings on either side of Route 112 now that the LIRR's lay-up yard is on the extreme east end of active trackage just before the Wading River extension. |

I haven't analyzed the actual numbers for 2015 yet, but I would say from my observation as motorman through the operating season, average seat occupancy was about 70%. Its not uncommon on busier days that the trolley is full all day with people turned away from lack of seats. We've debated extending operations into Summer evenings when the restaurant crowd is in Downtown, and adding Friday evenings, but we can't get the volunteers to sustain a schedule at those times. In earlier years there was persistent parking on the tracks in the evenings, but thanks to better signage and metered parking (except in the museum's own free lot), cars on the tracks are much less common. |

Do we know where if anywhere that car is ?Most likely scrapped on the spot. The hangar at JFK held only two PATH cars, the ones donated to two trolley museums we all know. Perhaps these two cars were held just in case if there was room at the 9/11 museum. But that's not the case unfortunately. Bill Newkirk |

Since the question was brought up about what the TMNY has and the NYTM does not, here are just a few notable items:1)Former NYCTA R-16 # 6398 recently repainted in the short lived "Quickie" Silver paint scheme w/blue doors which was only worn by only 20 R-16's circa 1984. (Note):This will not be the permanent paint job; Car will be repainted in the eaerly 1970's MTA "Silver and Blue" paint scheme in 2016.(Note # 2):This is the one and only "B" Division SMEE car preserved in a museum off of NYCTA property. 2)Former South Brooklyn Railway Whitcomb built 65 Tonner Diesel # 9;This locomotive was restored to active service after many hours of work by a small but dedicated group of volunteers.Plans are to "Operate" this locomotive IN SERVICE at the museum in 2016!!! Note:this is the "One and Only" OPERATING Whitcomb 65 Tonner Diesel in all of New York State! This is one of the "Jewel's of the museum's collection! 3)Brooklyn and Queens Transit "Clark" built PCC # 1000;This is the "One and Only" PCC constructed by the Clark Equipment Company. This car's restoration is set to begin in Spring,2016 after an earlier attempt to restore this car stalled due to the untimely death of one of the museum's members.Limited "Scope of work" was done this past Summer and things are all set for next Spring. 4)PATH PA-1 car # 143;One of two surviving "PA" class cars still in existence from the 09/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. This is the museum's newest car and arrived on 12/16/2015.Note:This car is considered an artifact and will be left "As Is" in order to tell the story of that terrible day in American history. This car is for display purposes only and will NOT be available for use to the riding public.Plans are to construct a permanent display for this car as well as additional artifacts still en route from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from the Twin Towers. 5)Former IRT "Low Voltage" car # 5600; While the NYTM does roster several operable "Low V" cars our car awaits heavy restoration work. Some limited work was done on this car over the past year which included repainting and re-installation of missing side windows. While not note worthy in the sense that they can be seen at NYTM i am listing this car here just as information. 6)Former IND R-4 # 825; Like the "Low V" cars the NYTM roster's several operable versions of this car type also but is being listed here for information purposes.Limited work done on this car over the last year which included replica 825 number plates giving this car back it's identity once again."City of New York" recently repainted onto the sides of the car this December.Additional work forthcoming on this car beginning in Spring,2016. 7)Former IND R-3 Flatcar # F401; This is a full size flatcar originally constructed for the IND system. This car was recently repainted;Brake rigging and repairs completed. This car is equipped with "Tranistion Couplers" with a knuckle coupler on one end and a "H2a" coupler on the other. This car operates eith Diesel # 9 and can be used to couple to almost any "Heavy rail" car in the museum's collection. Of course there are several other noteworthy cars in the museum's collection which are too numerous to list here. What the museum truly needs are the volunteer's needed to restore some of these old cars. They cannot restore themselves! Have the desire to help out on fixing these relic's from another era? I invite "YOU" to get involved in our all volunteer effort! Forget the naysayer's here who say it can't be done-We ARE DOING it and making a difference! No special skills or special tools are required-just an honest desire to help and to get involved! Gone are the days of old when the TMNY was considered a junkyard.Things are happening at a pace not seen in years! Still skeptical? Consider this: our group has been active at the TMNY for a little over 15 months; In that short time we have reactivated a dead diesel locomotive, repainted several cars and were instrumental in acquiring the museum's first new car since the R-16's arrival back in 1996.Work on a second "Active" car is set to begin next year as well, effectively doubling our revenue capacity. The ridership levels are there and things are indeed happening at the Trolley Museum of New York-I welcome all of you here to join in on the fun of bringing this museum back from the brink.Thank you all for reading.... |

If you figured out a way to "operate" this car, I would make it my business to come up and visit the museum and would encourage others to do so as well. I see no reason to let what is one of only two examples of this car type at museums sit inoperable. If there were three or four other operating PA1/2/3 cars, then sure, keep this one as an "artifact". But since there aren't, I think it should be operated, if possible. |
