Stations are opened at Liberty Avenue, Van Siclen Avenue, Sheppard Avenue and Euclid Avenue. Tuscarora Almanac - November 28, 1969 - The Book of Wrecks There was a collision on the IND Grand Concourse Line when an empty ten car "CC" rolled backwards from 167 Street and crashed into another "CC" train at the161 Street Station during the PM rush. The consist of the empty train was (n) 501, 456, 393, 660, 513, 428, 354, 275, 621 and 434. The consist of the train at 161 Street was (n) 634, 568, 381, 511, 527, 504, 547, 563, 619 and 444. This also marked the official death of the "HH" local. The shuttle had been "temporarily" shut down 2-1/2 years prior, in 1946. At this time, it had first been considered for local service between Court St and B'way-East NY, when that station opened for the "A" train. But, the BoT decided to continue with service to B'way-ENY, using the same center track setup at Ralph and Rockaway Aves. When Euclid Ave opened, two years later, the "HH" plan was off the table. |

The B of T didn’t use the exact same track set up at Ralph and Rockaway. S/B trains still had to use the exp tk S/O Utica, but N/B trains used the lcl tk. The service pattern was that N/O ENY, S/B trains would use the Xover between the exp tks to access the N/B exp tk. There is another diamond Xover between the N/B exp and lcl tks and S/B trains would enter either the N/B exp or N/B lcl tk and “stub end” at the N/B platform at ENY. The only thing I’m not sure of is whether or not at any point prior to Euclid’s opening, the S/B tks in ENY station became available allowing S/B trains to right rail into ENY and relay S/O the station. What is interesting about the HH situation is that some of the B of T maps from the era show the Fulton St Line open to Euclid and the HH as a lcl operating between Court and ENY, even though the HH shuttle was abandoned even before the subway opened to ENY. |

What also is interesting is that when the new R-10 fleet was being delivered beginning in August-September 1948, their printed roll signs still would have the "HH" and "Court Street" on them, two years after the shuttle closed. The B of T had plans to recapture the Liberty Av el structure long before the R-10s were ordered. The subway infrastructure between ENY and Euclid (76 St?) and the partial ramps as far as the N/E of Grant was completed prior to US involvement in WWII just lacking track, signals and station finish so the R-10s came prepared for any eventuality. |

It is hard to imagine that the entire subway was lit with incandescent bulbs up until then, but I remember riding the IND when it still was. I also remember going to Ft Hamilton Pkway and 15th PP and they still hadn't converted into the late 70s, long after most of the others were. I still find Ft Hamilton a creepy looking station for some reason. |

Fort Hamilton Parkway and Church Avenue on the IND "F" in June 1986 still had the incandescent bulbs on the platforms, and they were the last two holdouts. And the BoT logo can be found boldly on each exterior side of the ramp in question, so it was them as a city agency that started the construction on the ramp. Also, the mezzanine level at the Liberty Avenue station has this tiled mosaic saying "Richmond Hill and ???" (painted over with "<-Lefferts Blvd->". Wonder if it said Ozone Park(for Cross Bay Boulevard), Aqueduct (near a planned terminal for 105th Street) or Rockaways???-William A. Padron ["Euclid"] |

I felt as though I'd stepped into a twilight zone. There was a loose chainlink fence that blocked off the rest of the platform from the northern end, where the underpass was. It looked abandoned even though Aqueduct Specials used it. |

What’s interesting about the destination signs on the R-10s is that the model board at Euclid indicate ”To Lefferts Ave” at the S/EW of grant and the original mezzanine signs at both Euclid and Grant originally read “To Lefferts Avenue and the Rockaways” the word “avenue” was decaled over with the word “Blvd” in a completely different font from the original. |

So the IND used the "Boro[ugh] Hall" secondary name for both the Jay St. and Court St. stations? None of the remaining signs at the Transit Museum say "Borough Hall", do they? Certainly, the IND Court St. station was closer to Borough Hall than the Jay St. station, but "Court St.-Borough Hall" makes me think of the BMT station now used by the R train. |

My sources show York St opened the same time as the Fulton St Line to Rockaway Ave and the Houston St Line opened between 2 Av and Jay St April 9 1936. At that time A service was routed off the Smith St Line to Fulton and E service which had terminated at E/Bway was extended to Church Ave. I have been told that although York St station was closed to the public prior to the date mentioned, the tracks in the station area were used to lay up trains that terminated at Jay St which were C Concourse expresses that ran there during rush hours. I have no idea why the station finish would be different except that possibly that type of tile finish was becoming available at the time and the B of T decided to try it as an experiment. |
