The grounds passes have been sold in recent years during the earlier rounds especially, there are many pretty well known players playing on the side courts. Sadly, they aren't particularly cheap. And the food prices are scary. But, it is an amazingly well attended event, with the retractable roof going on ( ready for next year) the finals will stay on schedule, and they are replacing Armstrong with the new grandstandand enlarging many side courts. Total attendance pushes the 750K mark, it really is a major event. And when I was a kid I could take the Q65A bus and walk into Forest Hills for very little and it was like I was going back in time.

It doesn't… for the most part. School starts September 9th this year, so the only days that kids wouldn't be able to attend are that Wednesday through Friday.

The idea was to create new tennis fans.

One significant change this year is the Women's semifinals, which traditionally have been on Friday afternoon have been moved to Thursday night for the first time ever. Likewise, the men's semifinals are on Friday for the first time.

The world doesn't revolve around sports, believe it or not.

The "significant" changes for this year are permanent going forward and were announced in 2013. I see no mention of accommodating NYC public school students anywhere in the article.

As an avid tennis fan and ofttimes player, I have been to the US Open over twenty times, and to Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Your premise is not entirely unfounded. Roland Garros has a huge section at the top of their Center Court, Court Philippe Chatrier, devoted to school children. I asked officials and was told that many schools declare a school holiday so the students can attend a day session early in the first week. On the other hand, I saw no such indication at Wimbledon.

Thus it is possible that there may have been something going on back in the '50's and '60's. However, there are some significant differences between then and now. One, which somebody already posted, was that your experience took place before the Open era. Secondly, the Open back then was held at Forest Hills and did not switch venues to Flushing Meadows until 1978. Finally, it is worth noting that, in the US Open ticket prices, there is not even a student or senior discount, and that anyone over 24 months must have a full price seat.
There is a discount for USTA members of all ages.

That never was an official announcement. "Gentlemen's agreements" are not always etched in stone (which are why they are called "gentlemen's agreements" as they are NOT requirements).

That's what I remember it being when I was younger (and as noted elsewhere, may not be as true as it once was now and this year certainly can't be honored this year with the religious holidays after that plus the Pope's visit). It certainly was changed.

And yes, those changes were made because the players had complained about playing the semis and finals back-to-back. This will be the first time since 2007 that the US Open will actually conclude on Sunday assuming no real bad weather (2008-'12 ended on Monday due to weather and the last two years were intentional Monday endings).

As a further point of potential interest (I'm wandering a bit far from SubChat, but bear with me), I've now finished reading the book that recounts CBST's first forty years.

In the early 2000s, CBST had been getting about 2,000 people for Yom Kippur at Javits. In 2001, with the holidays falling shortly after September 11, they expected and planned for about 3,000.

They got 6,000.

CBST welcomes anyone who shows up to its HHD services. No tickets are required. Thus it was a good available option for many Jews who might have been unaffiliated, but who felt the need to attend services particularly acutely after September 11, 2001.

I have no idea if they'll actually stick to this schedule, but according to Trip Planner+, the first revenue train from 34th St – Hudson Yards on 9/13 will leave at 12:59 PM and arrive at Main Street at 1:37 PM. The first train to Hudson Yards will leave Main Street at 12:26 PM and arrive at 34th at 1:03 PM.

I think it's more because of how often they've had to change it already.

Aim---I've read a lot of posts about the #7 Line extension in Manhattan and it occurred to me as to why that line and maybe the "F" couldn't have been extended to eastern Queens where there are no subways I that I know of. Are those areas considered the backwaters or something, or too residential with single dwelling homes whose owners don't want the subways there. It's always been a head scratcher to me, just like the #2 and #5 ending at Flatbush Avenue and leaving the whole of the flatlands without any subway service whatsoever.

I suspect at $200M/mile similar to what Paris recently paid for their brand new extensions, we'd see far more expansions. For $1B per mile, we get minimal extensions, especially in areas where people will complain about the noise, but building doesn't change the calculus too much given that there's minimal ridership to attract, and fare policies don't encourage bus -> subway -> bus usage, so the bus network would continue to run as is.

Both Flatbush and N/Lts were also temporary terminals with the N/Lts line intended to be extended east along N/Lts Av. The Flatbush Line was also intended to extend along Nostrand Av as a subway to around Ave M and as an el to Emmons Av. Although I have never actually seen documentation, I have heard that the tunnels for the Nostrand Av Line extend a couple of blocks past the S/E of Flatbush station and that they were actually exposed to public view until a new entrance was built at the S/E of the station although I’m not sure when. One of the problems with that extension is that I believe this tunnels end at the LIRR cut so extending farther would have been a problem.

Wasn't 179th St. Jamaica built as a permanent terminal? I think it has 8 tail tracks on 2 levels.

Or was it supposed to be a partial terminal like Continental with some trains relaying and some continuing to the (geographic) east?

It was to be identical to today's Church Av. The upper level yard was to be the 4 track main to head east.

I’m not sure if all 4 tracks of the upper level were intended to go farther east or just the 2 middle ones. At 179 St, the outside or local tracks go to the lower level and expand to a 4 track yard. The inside or express tracks continue east and expand to 4 tracks with AFAIK only the 2 middle tracks intended to go east.

I wonder how they chose that location. There is nothing in particular at 179th Street and Hillside.
