As an avid tennis fan and ofttimes player, I have been to the US Open over twenty times, and to Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Your premise is not entirely unfounded. Roland Garros has a huge section at the top of their Center Court, Court Philippe Chatrier, devoted to school children. I asked officials and was told that many schools declare a school holiday so the students can attend a day session early in the first week. On the other hand, I saw no such indication at Wimbledon. Thus it is possible that there may have been something going on back in the '50's and '60's. However, there are some significant differences between then and now. One, which somebody already posted, was that your experience took place before the Open era. Secondly, the Open back then was held at Forest Hills and did not switch venues to Flushing Meadows until 1978. Finally, it is worth noting that, in the US Open ticket prices, there is not even a student or senior discount, and that anyone over 24 months must have a full price seat. There is a discount for USTA members of all ages. |
