With the Yellow line suspended and no definite opening date the CTA started a work-around transporting new railcars from SKOKIE shops to 63rd St. lower yard where the married pairs are recoupled and now on active rails, the railcars sent to a Red line shop for final prep work.

The first transfer, #5675 5000 series railcar, shown on a siding where loading and reloading on the contractor's low-boy highway trailer takes place. When the mated railcar arrives, the loading takes place at the opposite end of the siding to keep cab ends correct.

A new railcars waits at the main gate of the CTA 63rd St. lower yard.

The major street running includes S. State St. from Pershing Rd. south to 63rd St. The view here is where of original Stockyards "L" crossed the street at 40th St.

Switching at the lower yard is handled by two Shuttlewagons. When four quads are assembled they are spotted on powered sidings. Four-car drag comes in from either the Red line or the Green line. The revenue cars bracket the four new cars for transfer to shops, usually the 98th St. Red line yard.

A drag awaits on the incline for clearance from Green line control.

Eight-car trains are unusual in the Green line. The drag consist is pictured just north of the Garfield Blvd. station.

The drag slows south of 17th St. junction where the Orange line connected to the south side main.

A milestone occurred Thursday, Aug. 27, when the 25th car transfer was received at 63rd St. The car was the seventh hundred delivered overall in the entire order from Bombadier. The total order is for 714 railcars. The order equipped the CTA Red, Purple, Green, Yellow, and Pink lines and was mostly successful except for the NYC seating style which is very unpopular in Chicago. The planned 7000 series railcars will revert to more 2 transverse seating.

The reverse trip going back to Skokie shops transfers cars scheduled for rehabs, cars marked for scrapping, and some in need or heavy shopping. A sewer vacuum machine was the transfer for one day.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing!

That last picture ... is there something wrong with the exterior or is that a reflection from the street?

Except the 1947 four compartment train sets, its been that way always. Our cars are always 48 ft in length.

That last picture is showing a car going back to Skokie. It is marked for scrapping. CTA painted the graffiti on the sides in case there was news photographer or TV covering the event since this was the first move. Other moves since carried the paint and criminal damage.

Ugh, by truck. Reminds me of all the NYC subway cars rolling down I-80 on the backs of trucks last decade. Those used to get to their destination via the general railway network.

WOW. That sucks for the CTA, but at least it's temporary. Why doesn't the NYC Subway get it's cars via rail? Seems like the obvious solution.

Why do people like Olog-hai and the like say "UGH" when the conversation turns to rail delivery of transit railcars. FACT....Passengers in Chicago who pay their fare don't care how their railcars were delivered.....rail....highway....canal barge.....air transport.....or built online. Get a life!!

Railroads are too slow and lack security anyways. And they are NOT CHEAP!

First off, even though I have seen those pics on other forums, I enjoyed again looking at them. I thought that New York still got there subway cars delivered by rail.

The R62A cars were built in Barre VT. They were shipped on flatcars. I used to see them passing through Pittsfield, MA on Conrail. They were usually right behind the locomotives because the railroad was concerned about vandalism and hoped the train crew could keep an eye on them. Of course that still doesn't provide a lot of security with 5 engines between the crew and the first car.

I seem to think a lot of the NY Subway cars are still getting rail transported... but it's just a sad statement when stuff has to get trucked about the state of our rail network, or it's inability to handle odd moves. The CTA situation is different, since it was an unexpected oopsie, and it's a temporary thing.

The R142 cars were also delivered by rail on flat cars from Plattsburgh NY to Fresh Pond Yard in Ridgewood Queens, where they were ramped down to track level and then hauled south along the LIRR/NY&A Bay Ridge branch to Linden Blvd where there is a ramp connection to the IRT New Lots Line at Livonia Av. Maybe the R179's will be delivered the same way, except they would be hauled north along the Canarsie line from Linden.

Chicago's streetcar system was one of the largest.....you bet there're tracks underneath lots of streets. About five years they dug up W. 63rd St under the Englewood "L". Under the street was streetcar tracks with wooden ties. On S. South Chicago Ave. near E. 69th St., they're removing the median and there are street bricks underneath. Day workers are salvaging the bricks just like they do for apartment building demolition.

circumstances change, things happen.

It quite easy to ship a car via road from Kawasaki in Yonkers to 207 shop, straight down Broadway, versus zig zags and reverse moves when done by rail.

A few years back when they were repaving a stretch of South Broadway in Denver, old Denver Tramways streetcar tracks were uncovered as old asphalt was rotomilled off. They were ripped up and a new base was put down for concrete paving. The same thing happened when Evans Ave. was redone in the early 90s - old streetcar tracks were uncovered and ripped out.

Last summer my aunt and I were driving up Western Ave and as we approached a railroad underpass, I caught a glimpse of streetcar tracks. Of course, Western was one the last streetcar routes to be converted to bus, the last streetcar run occurring on June 17, 1956.

Not exactly a long haul, but it would still be better to keep them off the roads and on the rail. Those could just be flat towed. Even if they have to go to Linden Blvd (not sure where the other connections are other than the Brooklyn street trackage), they could go down the Hudson, over to Oak Point, down the Hell Gate Line to connect with the subway...
