The Jamaica Yard Meltdown had reached crisis proportions by then. I read that the R-38s were originally intended for the D line, but were sidetracked to Queens and stayed there for the next year or two. |

Jamaica yard was evenly split between the oldest (R-1) and newest (R-7a and R-9) cars in 1966. R-1 cars were having mechanical issues with over half the fleet out at any given time. The remainder of the R-1 would only see another three years' service after being shipped to 207 Street for "AA" and "B" midday service.wayne |

Too many Arnines breaking down? That's exactly what it was. So many Arnines were out of action that they could not protect the service. Work trains were delayed for hours leaving the yard because of bad-order trains. There were twenty brand new R-38's on hand. Further deliveries were being delayed due to a strike at the Saint Louis Car Plant. These twenty cars were pressed into service, one each on the "E" and "F" lines. Thirty two R-16's were transferred from the BMT Eastern Division to the "GG". Their place was taken by BMT Standards pulled of the scrap line at Coney Island. It was a great summer for railfans. My (pretty vivid) recollection is that, prior to the Chrystie changes in 1967, Jamaica had only the newer arnines, and that as soon as the F began going to Coney Island after November, 1967, Jamaica then got lots (and lots) of the older arnines. I remember standing on the Manhattan-bound platform at 63 Drive one morning that November and watching train after train of old arnines going to Jamaica. Prior to that, I saw those old trains on the D, never the E, F, or GG. |

I don’t recall any R-1s in Queens prior to Chrystie, but I noticed that Jamaica had R-4s 400-799 and then the highest numbered R-7s, 7As and 9s from about 1500 to 1802 with the exception of 1575 which I seem to recall was kept in Wash Hts for AA/BB service. All the R-1s and the R-4s 800- 899 as well as the R-6s and lower numbered R-7s up to about 1499 seemed to be in Wash Hts and the Concourse. |

There is a September 1956 photo of Jamaica Yard with mostly R-1s visible along with R-9 1701. Virtually every train in the front part of the photo is signed as a Fred. |

Apparently after a few months, most of the cars that had failed were revived. Those R-16s that had been borrowed were back in Three Stooges territory by February of 1967, and scrapping of BMT standards resumed. |

Some BMT standards had GG LOCAL signs added to their route curtains. I guess the idea of using them on the GG was bantered about. The route sign in my BMT standard signbox has a GG LOCAL sign. |

IIRC those BMT standards that got that last-minute stay of execution were used only during rush hours on the Broadway-Broooklyn Local, the old #14 route. |

If I recall, that photo, the R-1s in JYd were in the 300 series. From my time in Wash Hts, it seemed that the 100 and 200 series R-1s and the 800 series R-4s were kept uptown with the remaining R-1s and R-4s sent to Queens. After that, I noticed that R-6s and 7s 7s that is 900 to about 1499 were uptown and the 1500 to 1802 were in Queens except for 1575 Which was assigned to 207 Yd and used almost exclusively on the AA/BB probably due to the internal fixtures being R-10 style and more easily maintainable at 207 where the R-10s were. |

Although that may have been the intent, If the Yd Master at DO Yd needed cars for service, they would have been sent to the 14 St Line or Myrtle/Chambers. A few even showed up on the Jamaica Express especially during the winter when some R-16s from the Jamaica Line were swapped with steels from the 14 St Line. |

I have no idea what the case of the winter problems actually were, However, I don’t recall the IRT having similar problems with their sister cars the R-15s or R-17s. I mentioned the R-15s only because although they were more a part of the R-10 generation, they had the same manufacture of door apparatus as the R-16s, National Pneumatic. The R-17s through 22s, on the other hand had door equipment manufactured by Consolidated Car Heating which may account for the lower instance of door failures on the IRT’s cars. |

As I recall when it was on the AA/BB it was always on the operating end (usually the North end) of any train it was on. When I was a M/M on the KK one evening, I had it in my train but unfortunately it was at the C/R position and not at either end. |

Although I never heard about it happening, I can see the possibility. It’s sort of like, the IND car mixed in with IRT cars that made it up to the IRT Jerome Line and nearly destroyed the S/B platform at Bedford Pk on the way from Concourse Yd to Mosholu Yd. |
