No. You will not be locked into a subscription plan, because there is no subscription plan. Updates, however will be required for all, unless they have a high class IT department, and pay the licensing fees for Windows 10 enterprise.There was talk of making Windows a subscription ala Adobe or MS Office, but this is not that. It may morph into something like that, but at that time you should be able to opt out of things like that. They have this thing called 'One Drive" which is in the Microsoft cloud. the idea is that you can access your stuff from any device, computer, tablet, phone, or toilet. MS Internet Explore has also gone bye bye. Look now for Microsoft Edge. It is a very stripped down browser, but with some nice features. The have a new thing, Cortina, to replace that obnoxious paper clip. YOu do have to sign up for this service, and the idea is that it will answer your questions before you ask them. Looks like profiling to me. I sugest avoiding those apps, LION suggest to use a real proguram instead. ROAR |

It appears that once you install Windows 10 on your computer, the computer no longer sees your network card, thus no internet. Some people have reported that by default IVP4 or IVP6 (if that is what it is called by defauklt is disabled. Other people have stated it is a problem that Microsoft knows about, it happens on their Surface device. Others have stated you have to roll back to 8.1, remove Cisco VPN (if you have it), then reinstall it. I ended up rolling back, and haven't removed Cisco VPN yet) I'll wait awhile until I receive more information. |

When I moved it into my dining room I added a PCI wireless card so the NIC itself has nothing connected hardware wise, but if w10 hoses the software side of the connection I'd still be potentially screwed. My friend Clippy (real name Clippit) was turned off as a default in XP, and has pretty much been gone since Office 2000. Cloying perhaps, but obnoxious is unfairly harsh. But Cortana (Cortina was a crappy car built by Ford in England)is really meant to compete with Siri from Apple. I can't believe I even typed this, I must have been out in the sun too long today. |

A bit of advice for anyone planning the move, download the latest drivers from your device vendors before you leap, that way you'll already have them should any of your devices go AWOL on you. Each new version of Windows changes the internal stuff, and the vendors have all written new stuff for Windows 10.I'll sit on the sidelines, I defenestrated when Vista came out and never looked back. |

The desktop has Windows 7, the laptop has Windows 8.1. The desktop can't be upgraded to Windows 10 due to an issue with the compatibility of the graphics card and the laptop is currently giving me fits (I believe it's hard drive is shot).I may not be upgrading to Windows 10 at all and may only see it if I ever get around to replacing my laptop. |

You COULD replace that video card for cheap, and you might be pleased to know that every laptop's hard disk is pretty easily replaceable. All you need to do it get a new drive, remove a couple of screws and put a new hard drive in there. As long as you still have your recovery media and your Windows key, you can light that back up again after a drive swap.Trust me on this, the crap that they're building right now is garbage. Well worth replacing a few parts to keep the old ones running unless they're more than six years old. |

Here's a hint *if* you have the media to reload the Windows that you have, all you need to do is hit up the intertubes and find the manual for that lappie and it will show you which screws to loosen up and put a much nice, bigger drive in it. And while you're at it and it's opened up, additional memory for older machines is dirt cheap too, so you can get a helluva upgrade for about a C note.If you'd like, I can assist over on OT if you decide to pull the trigger on that, but check it out. Server farm takes care of the actual link to the cards. But still, the clients were handling the card information unencrypted.
