I've been doing the insider thing, and I love it.

I'd highly recommend win10 on a 64 bit.

I usually only upgrade after something falls apart, but for this one, I think I'll keep it until 2023, or whenever the service period expires.

I stopped using Windows when Vista came out, so I'm really not up on how well it works. Given that it's primarily a cosmetic change to Windows 8 which was awful, it can't be any worse.

I run KNOS on all of my machines except for OS X Yosemite on the company machine. I know how to FIX Windows, but I won't use it myself.

Plan to swap out the QC 2.53 GHz for a pair of QC 2.80 GHz and up the ram to 16 GB.

And yes, I have the free option of upgrading to Windows 10.

Now I haven't tried Win10 and I'm not enthused about the lack of privacy but some of the complaints could use a little honesty improvement themselves. And better writing on MS's part could have headed these complaints off in the first place, so paraphrasing heavily:

1. At the middle of the right edge on the collage: "we will collect private info" followed several lines later by "as required by legal process" would be better expressed as "If required by legal order or law we will commence collecting private info to the extent required by that order or law". Regrettably hard to fault them for that.

2. Regarding Cortana, they could say "As the concept of Cortana is that it will anticipate your thoughts much as a private secretary does, we would have to record much of your private info in order to be able to provide that intuition. This of course would only start if you choose to use the Cortana feature. If you want this intuition to be present across all of your devices then that private info is also going to have to be relayed to them through our cloud servers, including storage of it for later transmission when your next device is online". The point critics should consider here is that basically if you wish to have a private secretary you are going have to decide if you want to trust him and his PC or not. MS maybe needs to point this out instead of presuming everybody knows the reasoning evolution they used when they worked out the design concept.

When they coat everything in sugary prose they may think they are avoiding showing anything negative to the customer but unfortunately the coating can also obscure positives that would show them more fairly. Recording your messages might be nothing more than scanning your existing Outlook file to remind you that you have written Mr. Jones about his sales performance twice before. For myself I don't need a private secretary to do this.

And yeah, there's a lot of those out there and many are in the militia. Heh. As to the "positioning" of features, Microsoft has never explained themselves well and thus the paranoid have lots of things to bite into with the poor phrasing. As for me, I'm not fond of Microsoft because of their security issues, not so much their privacy issues. If you connect to the intertubes, rest assured that if you lose any data, NSA can restore it from backups for you at a nominal cost. (grin)

Because Windows 9x means 95 or 98.

This is the correct answer.

A lot of legacy applications check if the system identifier said Windows 95 or Windows 98 by checking if the string began with Windows 9. If what is now called Windows 10 was released as Windows 9, such an app would run as if the OS were Windows 95/98, which would likely cause problems.

Boy howdy on that given that the old kernel back in those days was MSDOS and from Windows2000 onward, it's the NT kernel. The results from the system itself would be quite different. The libraries that those programs would be calling would be absolutely different though and any such test to see if it was "Win 9x" would return garbage on the newer systems. The real test is to see if there's no response when you call the version API.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms724832%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

The Windows version returned by the function is NOT the name of the product, but rather the kernel version. As you can see in the example above, there is no return at all if it's older than Win2000.

That will run afoul of at least one ISP's Terms of Service for residential accounts. Optimum Online's TOS explicitly prohibits servers of any kind on residential accounts. I don't know of any exception for Microsoft products.

It will also run afoul of my personal terms of service. I don't want Microsoft borrowing my computer for anything that has nothing to do with me. I don't even want to install the updates for myself, much less host them for others. What next, is GM going to add a feature to its next car that will allow others to borrow it if I'm not using it? Maybe they'll make a deal with Uber? This gets to be ridiculous after a while.

This whole idea should be tossed into the nearest trash can on a subway platform, where the rats can destroy it completely.

There's actually been years worth of easement on doing that kind of stuff, Adobe Flash Player has a setting that allows the Viacoms and ESPN's and other "media partners" to use your computer to serve up video to others. They call it "Peer Assisted Networking" and if you bring up your "Settings Manager" in Flash Player, you'll see it. That's what THAT does.

But gigabytes of downloads from Microsoft is definitely going to piss off some ISP's, and over cellular is going to make a lot of people unhappy with their tablets when they see their overages bills. Figured I might want to point that out.

That article though does explain how to turn that off ...

Microsoft licensed and installed Flash Player as part of the Windows 10 operating system. fixes and updates will be applied by Microsoft. Individual users cannot opt out of automatic updates, only enterprise systems can do that.

LION is not appreciative that there are so many geegaws that report back to home base, and not all of those apps are made by Microsoft, some are third party and are still collecting data.

I think Windows 10 is free because it is one HUGE data scoop. Knowing that I will still use the OS, but I will pay attention to what I do with it. Games against a computer are one thing, games against the internet are quite another.

I think it is the 63rd Street Tunnel.

But that photo is already several years old.

I am not a computer expert like you guys, so the bottom line question- Should I download it now or wait until any problems are solved? yes, or no?
