Where was 1575 during the festivities?

While it didn't bother me as I was never an R-10 fan and certainly not a fan of an arnine masquerading as one and I didn't miss it I was just wondering why it wasn't with the arnines at Brighton Beach.

The 5 R9s normally kept at 207th Street were used. The three (100, 484, and 1575) kept in the museum did not come out. With 6095 already out, using those cars as well would have left the museum with a lot of empty track.

Since When did R-10s ply the BMT?

I am surprised to see the Arnines in there. While the D did do Coney Island it was always and IND interloper.

ROAR... er... GRRRrrrrrr.

R-10s ran on what is today's (J) line in the 1950s, and by the 1960s, they were plying the West End.

I don’t recall R-10s being on the West End line in the 1960s at all. However, in 1970, when I was aM/M on the West End, I did get a slightly lost R-10 on one of my midday trips to 57/6 even though at the time the R-10s did not have 57 St signs.

You are correct. D train assignments from 78 and into the 80's shifted many times. For a period of time R-10s ran midday. They might have originally been called upon to dance the "Essex Street Shuffle" when cracks were first found on the North side of the Manhattan Bridge. I don't think 75 footers could navigate their way through the old downtown BMT to get to the Montague Tunnel (which ruled out R-44s). At least so I have been told. If anybody has been on the Yeti Ride at Disney World, that's kind of like what the Essex Street Shuffle felt like, albeit a bit slower (and without the Yeti). As a teenager it was a delight when an R-10 set pulled into 47-50th for the jaunt to Brighton Beach; but I remember sitting in the cars, looking around, trying to imagine what they would have been like when they were new. The motors strained their way up the hill from Newkirk to Avenue H, but it was fun just being there! Heck, at times it felt like the R-44s were straining their way up that hill too. R42/R40ms? No problem!

I rode on an R-10 D train once in 1979 or 1980. Since there was no Brighton Beach sign up front, the south motor had a blank destination sign. Naturally, it thundered and blazed along CPW in typical R-10 fashion.

Given that they were the same cloth as the usual arnine rolls, they might have been antiques from the BMT days OR they might have come off 16's or 27/30's. They were rare, but I'd always go rolling through to see if they were there on the south motors.

If I recall from my days as a M/M on the Easter, the post Chrystie roll signs installed on the Eastern’s R-9s were on cloth and not mylar so a sign reading 168 St/Jamaica would have been from that group. Most pre unification BMT destination signs were not necessarily station specific. A pre unification BMT roll sign on and R-1 might have simply read “Jamaica” rather that "168 St/Jamaica” like the signs for Canarsie and Astoria. In fact, even the original destination signs on the R-27s through 38s Read simply “Astoria” rather than “Ditmars Blvd” even though the Jamaica and Canarsie destinations were more street specific.

I remember seeing those on the R-27/30s in the late 60s/early 70s. In fact, IIRC, the north roll on the side signs just said "Astoria". The funny part is that the south roll said "95th Street/4th Avenue" (although I think the front sign just said "95th STREET"

I suspect the lower-case signs (originally on the R-16s, later on all the SMEEs that had the 3-sign setup) said "Ditmars Blvd/Astoria" or just "Ditmars Blvd". Not sure, as I never saw a 16 on the RR. There are pics of 16s on the RR on nycsubway.org, but they seem to be from the late 60s before the lower case signs were installed (and in most of them, you can't see the side signs anyway).

And of course, the R-42s signs did say "Ditmars Blvd / Astoria".

Believe it or not, I obtained an upper side sign curtain that had been installed on that group of R-1s that served time on the BMT after the R-10s arrived. Included are 57th St. M'nh'tt'n, Astoria, Times Square, Chambers St. and City Hall. It actually had a newer Three Stooges Division curtain spliced onto it, and this is what was on display at Cityana Gallery, where I bought that sign. For the longest time I couldn't figure out what car class those BMT signs were used on. At first I thought it may have come from a Triplex, but then I learned that the original Triplex destination signs were printed on the wrong side and were only visible when that sign was illuminated. FINALLY I put two and two together. Frankly, I'm going to hang onto that curtain; I've never seen one offered before on ebay.

I don't think that was a (D) or (F). There may have been some reason why those museum cars were pressed into (QB) service. All cars used on that (QB) were museum cars.

#1208, now scrapped :( was the car Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia operated to open the 6th Ave subway.

Interesting but not really that unlikely. As I mentioned in my post, I actually operated an R-10 on a midday West End to 57/6 in early 1970 however, their appearance there was rare as was the case with R-10’s appearances on the pre Chrystie AA and BB. An occasional R-10 would show up there if it was needed to make full service.
