In fact, even the original destination signs on the R-27s through 38s Read simply “Astoria” rather than “Ditmars Blvd” even though the Jamaica and Canarsie destinations were more street specific.

I remember seeing those on the R-27/30s in the late 60s/early 70s. In fact, IIRC, the north roll on the side signs just said "Astoria". The funny part is that the south roll said "95th Street/4th Avenue" (although I think the front sign just said "95th STREET"

I suspect the lower-case signs (originally on the R-16s, later on all the SMEEs that had the 3-sign setup) said "Ditmars Blvd/Astoria" or just "Ditmars Blvd". Not sure, as I never saw a 16 on the RR. There are pics of 16s on the RR on nycsubway.org, but they seem to be from the late 60s before the lower case signs were installed (and in most of them, you can't see the side signs anyway).

And of course, the R-42s signs did say "Ditmars Blvd / Astoria".
