Come to Think of It, Do 181st & 191st Have Stairways to the Street? |
|
Posted by heypaul on Sat May 23 07:08:31 2015 If there are no stairways at these stations, are train engineers ordered not to stop at them in the event of an emergency? |

And what is amazing is you got at 191st Street and one of the deepest stations of the system to Dyckman Street on the (1), which not only comes out of the tunnel, but is actually elevated. |

Yup, because Fort George Hill is very steep. So the train can go from being deep underground to being above ground while the roadbed stays just about flat. |

Another amazing thing about 191 St is that, despite its depth, it can be exited horizontally using a pedestrian tunnel from the station to Broadway, which runs in a "canyon" between St. Nicholas Av and Fort Washington Av at that point. |

That is true that the roadbed stays flat in that entire stretch.Few realize how much in a hurry the depths change otherwise over there. |

Aye.It also dips into a huge valley (aka Manhattan Valley) in which 125th street is the lowest point, which is also why 125th on the is on an elevated structure between 121st Street and around 132nd Street, give or take. From that point on, the area slopes almost steadily (155th Street and Broadway is an exception, and is actually a mini-valley itself) into Washington Heights, and Fort George at 191st Street (by Fort Washington Avenue and Overlook Terrace are the highest points in the city). |

Yup. Just gotta be careful. The underpass described can be a little bit on the dangerous side at night since it's pretty iffy on the lighting sometimes. Not to mention there's a bunch of water leaks. I wouldn't go in it after a huge rainfall. The tunnel on a good day. This is with just ONE bulb out. Imagine if there's more than that...?! |

There's also an external stairway, which may or may not be considered part of the station, but last I saw (several years ago) it was closed off due to poor conditions. |

A stairway from where to where? Outside stairs would not be too useful to access that station. You would have to go up, just to go back down again, or go down and then through the tunnel. There are some metal stairways in the area that are actually part of building fire escapes, not related to the subway at all. |

It was a stairway from just outside the upper entrance to lower "street" level. Presumably the stairs was an alternate to the tunnel. The stairs were blocked at the time so I couldn't explore it.I seem to remember that the upper entrance also had an ancient token booth, but my memory is very hazy on that. |

Heh, or better yet walked it. (Although I think the hills going up from Richmond Terrace to St. Marks Place are even steeper, and I'm sure some hills up in The Bronx could give the Victory hill a run for its money).I remember last year, there was a time when traffic was backed up for miles along Victory Blvd, in part due to the fact that people had difficulty going down that hill. |
